Oooh I have found the perfect topic for today's long rambling morning thread! A distillation of the 12 Ramzans I've spent in #NYC trying out all kinds of #iftar food from around the globe.

Strap in, folks! This is gonna be a long one!
First of all, as a desi, it is important to remember that the "iftar food" concept in NYC isn't hyper-localized like in India. In Bombay, you head to Mohd Ali Road. In Pune, you head to Shivaji Market. But that, remember, is a result of how India has ghettoized Muslims.
New York City has over a million Muslims, roughly 12-15% of the city's population. And they are very diverse in terms of country origins and culinary traditions. And are spread out all over the city. So there is no one big iftar spot like @peeyuka or I grew up knowing.

Today 1.8 billion Muslims 🌎 fast for 30 days from dawn to sunset.

For my non-muslim friends 👇

You can eat and drink in front of a fasting person during the month of #Ramadan and don’t feel bad. 1/9
#Ramadan is a month of self-control and self reflect to connect with the community for the broader good. Employers, plan to schedule work as usual and maybe skip lunch with Muslim colleagues -:) 2/9
Muslims love to host you for #Iftar (dinner to break fasting). You do not need to fast to attend the dinner. If you have a Muslim friend, please do iftar — it’s yummy and lovely. 3/9

Yesterday, my Maa—a Hindu woman who fasted every Tues "for Ganpati" all thru her 32 yrs of marriage, until Papa passed away—observed her one day of #Ramzan fast, for the 16th consecutive year.

She put to use her food photography skills—learnt over many shouting matches with me—
...neatly arranging her #Iftar spread to share pix with her Muslim friends.

She began teaching at a kindergarten school in a predominantly Muslim + Punjabi neighborhood (Kurla), when I was in high school. Her colleagues fasted.
She joined them, on what she learnt as the most...
...auspicious day of #Ramzan month.
She was a teacher in the morning shift. But on this day, she would carry a watermelon ("it's cheaper from your nearby Kalina market") & take the crowded bus again to school in the evening, to break her fast with colleagues who worked in the...

Vaishno Devi Shrine prepares sehri, #iftar for 500 Muslims amid #Ramzan

Imagine if all our 40,000 temples were not destroyed how many of our Muslim & Christian bros & sis we could feed

Glad #RamMandir is getting finally rebuild. It is a good start 🙏🏼

Remember during Tablighi virus spread LeLiJi spread fake news that 400 devotees were stranded inside Vaishno Devi temple & are Corona positive.

Today the same temple is giving them free food.
Interesting find. In 2014 when RBI wanted to issue Rs5/10 coins with Vaishno Devi on it. Mr. Nafis Qazi filed a case in Delhi court to block it. This is how fake secularism works.

Free is always good for these people.

[Thread]1/ This thread is about @Keir_Starmer and #Islamophobia. Yesterday three Tory MPs were censured for sharing a doctored video about @Keir_Starmer . The video, shared by now deleted account @NJamesWorld, attempted to discredit Starmer's handling of the grooming gang crisis
2/ I was interested to see if these disinformation tweets shared by Tory MPs including the Health Minister @NadineDorries impacted upon the abuse @Keir_starmer would receive online. I downloaded around 29,491 interactions received by Starmer's account between 11th May & 15th May
3/ I then grouped those tweets according to those that mentioned a cluster of keywords usually used by the right in narrating the grooming crisis, namely, paedophilia, saville (a symbol of paedophilia). It would be useful to see if the shared video prompted a spike in mentions

Before I head to @GovTimWalz’s #Iftar tonight, here are pix of the Iftar I held in my office last night w many friends & allies. During #Ramadan we reflect on what it’s like not to eat; we study scripture & each other’s hearts. We are always stronger together. #RamadanMubarak ImageImageImageImage
