What is the epidemiological impact of a #falsenegative #COVID test? An important question in a high vaxx/low NPI context, but one that cannot be studied in a experiment for obvious reasons. Enter the UK, a reliable supplier of #naturalexperiments. 🧵⬇️

On Oct 15, @UKHSA suspended an #Immensa lab, because of community reports of neg PCR tests following a pos lateral flow. There was loads of excellent reporting e.g. by @rowenamason @tomjs @JamieGrierson. NHS TT estimates that 43,000 individuals may have been given a .. 2/N ImageImage

#IMMENSA This is eye watering.

All in issue :Staff training, supervision, machinery, safety, lack of SOPS

As one commentator puts it “the sector has become like the Wild West”

Horrified to see DHSC work still being sent to shared Immensa AND Dante Lab at Loughborough
Dr Mark Collery, from Micropathology Ltd, a leading UK laboratory serving more than 200 hospitals across the country, said the Wolverhampton lab was “dangerous” and, in non-Covid times, would have been shut down.
We know from earlier statements that the incident started on 2nd Sept and went on until 11th Oct. (Announced on 15th) That is over 40 days .

Processing c600 tests an hour. x how many hours a day?
7 days a week.

If 8 hrs a day = 4800 a day.

How many machines? Image

On the question of @UKAS accreditation.

It looks to me as if the 4th August 2021 contract is likely the current one

3.1.6/ Supplier warrants that it maintains UKAS accreditation of facilities…
4.1.2; providesservices in accordance with UKAS accreditation requirements
It also warrants that any subcontractor will be UKAS accredited for the supply of the relevant services (4.4.5)

And the facilities will be operated in accordance with @UKAS standards & they have all the necessary consents laid down by @UKAS (10.1.1)
And it has and shall maintain all nec rights, consents, authorisation, accreditations and licences to supply the Servjces at the Facilities (10.1.9)

The contract is here. Although the original end date is 27 Sept it has a provision that enables a total of 3, 4 week extensions

@RobertSyms Wow! @RobertSyms

1/ Wales have not submitted any case or death data
2/. It is Monday (..so tends to be low Sunday and Monday…then catch up Tuesday to Friday
3/. It is half term. Testing reduces a lot.
4/. Infectious diseases both grow and subside exponentially.
@RobertSyms 5/. So if cases are “dropping like a stone” that is a sign that there is trouble in the testing world.

It was the first clue there was a problem with testing #Immensa fiasco. @RobertSyms

6/ Positivity levels are increasing 9.8% in England from today’s website.
@RobertSyms However.

I would expect half term, thus reducing human contact in classrooms to reduce the opportunities for Covid to grow. But infections caught towards the end of last week, will likely show up this

Ask your colleague, Alex Chalk, who was maskless in PMQs on Wed @RobertSyms

The thing that struck me most about the recent void data is that at one point (see @OliasDave animation - and h/t to him for digging into this in the first place) voids hit nearly 10%. Which is more than the known prevalence at the time.
This is not #IMMENSA specific data but regional data aggregated from all labs

So some may be very low in voids and others even higher

So lab specific void data would be very helpful, as would data about the numbers & percentage IMMENSA handled from each tests site each day/week
I recall that around last September there were large numbers of voids from one lab. Maybe more. Which one(s)? What was the cause(s)?

And Randox binned large numbers (which they said took too long to get to them).

What is the KPI contractual measure for voids?

THREAD. Encouraged by @fascinatorfun, I've been taking a look at NHS Test & Trace data on void PCR results, hoping this might shed light on how different regions have been affected by the #Immensa lab failure. TL;DR there is a problem affecting labs, but not just for the SW.
If you’ve taken a PCR test, it’s possible (though not likely) that you’ll have had one of these - a void result. It means that the lab wasn’t able to read the sample, or some other problem prevented a definitive result (so you need to do another test). nhs.uk/conditions/cor…
@fascinatorfun noted that voids “often give a clue as to whether there are equipment issues, training needs or overstretched capacity resulting in people rushing and taking short cuts”. And as @OliasDave has shown, the void data are weird.
