If you've followed me a long time, you've seen my transition from a "#linkblogger" (5-15 short hits/day) to an "essay-#blogger" (5-7 articles/week). I'm loving the new mode but returning to linkblogging is also intensely, unexpectedly gratifying:

My last #linkblogging foray was so great - and my link-backlog is so large - that I'm doing another one.

Link the first: "Siphon," @xkcd's delightful, whimsical "#physics-how-the-fuck-does-it-work" one-shot (visit the link, the tooltip is great):

1. Thread on the ableist fetishization of so-called intelligence in academia. I just read yet another article that glorifies so-called intelligence, which is a social construct rooted in eugenics.
2. In an ableist culture (such as ours) in which so-called intelligence is so idolized that it’s a condition of citizenship & personhood, everyone will have anxieties about whether they’re ‘intelligent enough.’
3. Intelligence is a disciplinary apparatus that mobilizes people into a regime of compulsory (able-minded) intelligence, which conveniently justifies capitalism as a ‘meritocracy’ that both produces and rewards the most ‘intelligent’ (nondisabled) citizens.

I collected a list of resources for my future doctoral students @UniFAU at the @CogCoVi lab - on 1st of October, my first 3 doctoral students will start their adventures: here is the collection of all those resources that are hopefully helpful and might also help others?

1/n Image
Of course, my collection is biased and contains a lot of resources I found during my postdoc @MIT_CSAIL and @mitbrainandcog so let’s start with a classic with a very promising title: How to do Research

Bill Freeman has his own piece with the same title people.csail.mit.edu/billf/www/pape…

This is my pool. Someone had the "smart" idea to make the shallow end 5' 5". For comparison, I'm 5' 10". So, after two steps, my head goes under water. The pool is obviously not for children. 🧵 Image
The problem with the depth is that until recently, I was terrified of water. And with this pool, I can't get tired halfway and stand up. I must make it to either end or side to reach safety.
I learnt to swim to survive. I love traveling and for island destinations, I needed to know my way around water. I swam to enhance my travel experience and to not die on vacation. This year, I finally chose to face my trepidation around water.

Let the takeover begin! My name is Fay (@xiaofei_lin) and I'm a 4th year PhD candidate in Biochemistry @UCLA. I use math modeling to study immune response. I'm a HUGE advocate for wellness during #phdlife. 1/
During today's takeover, I hope to explore the obstacles impeding wellness in the current culture of academia, and methods to stay healthy while maintaining a love for science. Check back on this thread for the highlights of the discussion. 2/

[Day1: Strategic SciComm Through Play]
Often times, when talking #SciComm #SciOut #PubEng #SciEng #SciEdu #SciArt, we spend a lot of discussions on the idea of play + joy + fun for target audiences.

As a practitioner, do use "play" to get better in your practice? If not, why?
Do opportunities & spaces to "PLAY" with your craft/skills in communicating #science even exist for you?

For academics, the lack of opportunity to learn+practice+play w/ public speaking significantly impacts careers, like favoritism of "charismatic ppl" to bad teaching habits.
In the #Arts + #SciArt, rehearsals + practice time is crucial in honing your craft.
In #MuseumEd & #projectdevelopment, there are stages for prototyping, focus grouping, beta-testing to "play".

In #Academia, prof dev workshops exist, but do you have a space for practice?

I could not be more ashamed of our education system when with one hand we celebrate #WomenInSTEM and with the other we cut their contributions out of our history.
Today I learned that EVERY SINGLE mention of a woman has been removed from the new HSC physics syllabus 1/
A bit of background: A new HSC physics syllabus was introduced in 2018, promising to give students a broad taste of physics and to bring them to university prepared with strong critical thinking skills and technical knowledge 2/
For those unfamiliar with the new syllabus: It more than doubles the number of equations, introduces topics that haven’t been taught for over 15 years and introduces many more experiments 3/
