Born into slavery in 1864, Young grew up in Ohio and attended an integrated high school, where he excelled. He attended West Point, becoming the third Black cadet to graduate despite the hostility of many of his peers.

Young served in the 9th and 10th Cav. at various western posts, rising to the rank of CPT. He taught military science at Wilberforce University, served two tours in the Philippines, became the first Black superintendent of a national park, and was a foreign military attaché.

First formed in 1866, the Indian Scouts were a force of up to 1,000 men (although this slowly declined as the years passed) whose members were be compensated the same as a white cavalryman.

The Indian Scouts supplied desperately needed knowledge of the terrain and enemy belligerents to an Army short on expertise and struggling to accomplish its mission. Indian Scouts were essential to Army’s efforts across the greater frontier.

Custer divided the 7th Cavalry's 12 companies into three battalions. Custer ordered one three-company battalion, commanded by Major Marcus Reno, to cross the river and attack the village from the south.

Another BN of three companies, under Captain Frederick Benteen, marched southwest to engage any hostile Indians it encountered. Custer retained five companies under his direct command. The last company provided escort for pack mules of the baggage and ammunition train.

To start with, the phrase "our Indian Wars, which lasted roughly 300 years (circa 1600-1890)" contains numerous misguided assumptions.
Who is the "we" being referenced in "our Indians Wars"? By selecting a starting date of 1600, near the beginning of European colonization but long before the US ever existed, he can only mean "we white people."
