Dedicating today's picture to the indomitable spirit of my neighbours from the @koratagiri Village. Camping by the side of the Hosur-Denkannikottai street for the last 4 days in incessant rain, women, children & men and now police in riot gear. #IndiAves @mkstalin @ptrmadurai 1/5
Driven to desperation by the incessant quarrying around the village, the villagers, in early April, had refused to send their children to school. The issue was resolved then by what soon would prove to be hollow promises. A road, cutting through the village was re-done 2/5
And lorries laden with gravel, once again given permission to travel day and night. Now the argument is that the villagers have no right to object to movement on these roads. Gravel needed by the rest of the citizens is allowed to ruin their lives. 3/5

Journey2 #Pothigai is a great opportunity2see the vegetational variation in #KMTR,as the altitude varies, as crucial part of the trek is vertical climb& while nearing the peak, it's almost 90degree slope. This is view of Karaiyar&the surrounding vegetation from Thulukkan mottai
From Karaiyar to almost mid way to kannikatti, Tropical evergreen forest with many layers and dominated by taller and bigger trees like Ficus. The ground is not too wet and the springs in the higher altitude have already become big streams. #Pothigai #Tirunelveli #KMTR #forests
Midway2kannikatti,the size of the tree trunks reduces.Still trees are taller and ground becomes moist&the moisture level increases as we go up. In this season, this belt is invaded by giant spiders. This is near Injikuzhi. #Pothigai #KMTR #Tirunelveli Follow this thread 2 know more

Ready to take off on his flight path today! This Short-eared Owl got beaten down by the heat wave and was found lying recumbent near Pune's grasslands. He's made a full recovery in 1 week with intensive treatment @resq_wildlife more about SEOs in the thread 👇#indiaves
The owl was admitted in a severely dehydrated condition and was completely unable to lift its head or fly. After 2 days of intensive treatment, rehydration & rehab, it finally perked up & began perching. On day 3 it began taking short flights and self-feeding.
The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a wide-ranging species found across almost all continents except Antarctica and Australia. It is a winter migrant species in the Indian sub-continent, and is one of the few owls known to be migratory.

A lot can happen in 10 minutes - Let me tell you a short story about this picture of Arrowhead when she was a cub. #IndiAves no birds though but interesting. #ThePhotoHour
7 years ago towards the end of the safari time we reached the exit with about 20 minutes to spare. The park had been very quiet. My friend and guide Raj Kumar decided that we are going to check an area for activity one last time. I went along reluctantly not expecting much but..
I was wrong. With a few minutes we heard Sambar deer frantically calling out in alarm and soon saw a tigress called Krishna with her 3 cubs in tow walking down the road. I remember Rajkumar telling me “Boss you have 10 minutes” and a lot can happen in 10 minutes

My favourite owl - the Spotted Owlet or Athene brama - common and wide spread across Indian south of Himalayas. This picture actually got me an award - not a great shot but getting the focus right was tough and had to be done manually as the auto focussing wasn’t fast enough then
They are small owls that roost and nest in holes on trees, rocks and even buildings. And we get them at our home too. Loud guys in the night. #OwlSomeDiwali #IndiAves
Some more pictures of Spotted Owlets for an #OwlSomeDiwali - greetings to all my friends on #IndiAves and to other lesser mortals who don’t look out for birds. 🙏

At Chhapar, a sleepy village 4 hours from Jaipur, life for the birds is high energy and high stress. A constant battle for survival. This black-winged kite flew from a distant perch to come close to me. He was carrying a skink. Sequence follows.

Yesterday's got a leucistic Jungle Babbler @ Ayodhya #IndiAves
In leucistic birds, affected plumage lacks melanin pigment due to the cells responsible for melanin production being absent. #birdwatching #nature #BirdsSeenIn2021 #BBCWildlifePOTD @Avibase @ThePhotoHour
2/n #IndiAves
This results in a white feathers, unless the normal plumage colour also comprises carotenoids (e.g. yellows), which remain unaffected by the condition. Although leucism is inherited, the extent and positioning of the white colouration
3/n #IndiAves
can vary between adults and their young, and can also skip generations if leucistic genes are recessive.
The reduction of pigment in leucistic birds causes feathers to weaken and be more prone to wear.

On #WorldTourismDay let me tell you about my favourite place on this planet - the area of the three lakes in Ranthambhore national park. It’s a stunning place. I will take a few minutes of your time but it may brighten up your day. 🙏
#ThePhotoHour Image
The overall backdrop is stunning because of a plus 1000 years old UNESCO World Heritage site Hill fort from which the park gets it name. It’s just too imposing. #Rajasthan Image
There are lots of pretty places but few where our countries glorious ancient past mixes with raw nature is such a mind blowing manner. Hundreds of years ago people actually prayed in this mosque. Monuments here are a classic mix of Rajput and Mughal architecture #IncredibleIndia Image

Pictures of common birds from a tiny sanctuary that we call home. We bought a barren piece of land to build our house on and are slowly trying to turn it into a mini sanctuary. All these pictures are from within our compound. #IndiAves #TribeIndiAves
It’s easy to do and great fun. Every new species that we see is a ‘major discovery’ for us
It soon becomes a pretty cool outdoor studio for lazy blokes like me. No carrying heavy equipment over rough tracks cause we can shoot with a beer glass in one hand. Makes life easier

White-rumped Snowfinch (Onychostruthus taczanowskii) is one of the two species of Snowfinches that can be seen reliably in India only in the Tibetan Plateau region of North Sikkim, generally above 4500 meters (the other being Rufous-necked Snowfinch)
White-rumped Snowfinch associate very strongly with Black-lipped Pika or Plateau Pika , the most abundant mammal in this cold desert. Their burrows are used for nesting and also used for roosting, particularly by the juveniles.

Dung of large herbivores, particularly that of Domestic Yak has an important place in the grassland ecology of this high plateau. Dungs increases the abundance of arthropods particularly the larvae of coleopteran beetles which are consumed by a number of species of birds.
Many birds are often found close to areas with an abundance of dung pats. Ground Tits have long and curved beaks to probe into the dung pats and the soil around it for insects.

The huge Peacock had adopted our house as his territory ! He sensed that human tenants on his territory were nice ! They would offer wheat and and other tidbits to eat !
He also brought along his harem of around 5 peahens ! (1/3)
His active love-life eventually bore fruits! Umm...rather, bore eggs .
One of the hens chose the leaf-covered top of a large crate to lay eggs on ! Here she is seen sitting on the eggs!
My family waited patiently for days to see the chicks come out ! (2/3) ImageImage
Alas, no chicks came out ! And one fine day, dictated by instinct, she finally abandoned the eggs !
Here is the pic of the abandoned 'nest', if I may call it so ! 😥😢(3/3) Image

Almost all wild cats are ‘ambush hunters’ and #Camouflage is really important to them. I would have never spotted this leopard if he did not turn his head to look towards us

- a photo thread for #IndiAves
Same here. If this Caracal had not moved her head to show her gorgeous ‘tufted ears’ my guide would have never spotted her.
Name: सिया or Ink - गोश or ears : to make सियागोश in Hindi, their name
We had spotted this Jungle cat entering this patch of short grass and then totally lost her till she came out in the open. We are good at spotting wildlife, really good but this one played with us.

Today, my bother called me in the morning and told me that he found a chick at the bottom of a tree with a large hole. I ID the bird and he managed a bamboo 🪜 to place the chick in the hole. He noticed 2 more chicks there.

#IndiAves #BirdsSeenIn2021 #birdwatching ImageImage
While doing so he was attacked by one the parents. The hole was little wide at its mouth so we concluded that the chick came out of its own while crawling inside the hole.
