[Thread] Last Night's #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020 #DayOfRage & Police CopAganda. PPB reporting that there was an undercover Fed. While this isn't surprising, there is always a chance this is being used to make everyone suspicious of eachother. And if Feds were in the crowd...
2/they were likely participating in riot. Police also claiming shots were fired into bar at protest. Sorry, gunshots don't go unnoticed. Portland police were totally absent for hours until after statues were toppled. The night before they arrested 26 for standing in a crosswalk..
3/Police claim to be busy with man with gun in SE. They have 900 full time cops and only a couple dozen are on the Rapid Response Team. The 911 call for man w/ gun was made at 645pm according to @pdxpolicelog, statue was downed around 9pm...

In recognition of #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020 I'd like to tell you a bit about my friend Jehry Rivera, a part of the Terraba indigenous group, which lives on a mountainside in southern Costa Rica.
2/ The Terraba are mostly found in Panama, and the ones who live in Costa Rica have evidence that they were brought to Costa Rica by the invading Spanish hundreds of years ago.
3/ They are a pretty interesting group. They live in modern Costa Rican homes and have a public school. But they also keep ancient ways including a language, religious beliefs, natural medicine from plants, food and more. It's a mix of the modern and the traditional.

If you are observing #ColumbusDay instead of #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020 here is a list of what you are celebrating...

1. Christopher Columbus's army used Indigenous people as dog food. They were known to feed live babies to dogs in front of their horrified parents.

CW: SA
2.) His "voyage" initiated the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade when he captured 1600 Taino people and shipped them to Spain for gold. Most died on the journey.
3.) Columbus sex trafficked Indigenous girls for his own personal profit. He journaled, “There are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand.”

A reminder on this #IndigenousPeoplesDay #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020 that many Black Native people are not enrolled in their tribes of origin because of historical and current anti-Black citizenship policies.
In the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations, descendants of people of African descent enslaved by tribal members are actively excluded from citizenship rights and tribal programs due to our ancestors’ statuses as enslaved people. We were promised citizenship in the Treaty of 1866.
Are we not “Indigenous” because our tribes have broken their treaty promises of citizenship? To exclude us from Indigeneity is to affirm our tribes’ anti-Black policies and histories. For many programs today, in order to be considered Indigenous, one must be enrolled

Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay! A reminder that there are many different groups of Black Native people within the United States and that often our ties to Indigenous Nations are through violence and slavery at the hands of Indigenous people. Our ancestors were resilient!
Not all relationships between Black and Native people were ones of mutual respect. Not all Native nations assisted runaway slaves. In fact, some Native nations—like the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations—recaptured and re-enslaved runaway slaves of African descent.
This doesn’t negate our Indigenous ancestry, but certainly complicates it. Our introduction to our tribes of origin was not through peace or mutual understanding, but through violence, forced labor, and forced migration on the Trail of Tears while enslaved.
