Breaking: @SanofiUS will cut list price of best selling Lantus insulin by 78%.

Yes! This follows similar announcements by @LillyPad and @novonordiskus
#insulin4all

I hoped this will happen and it has. This will help millions in America. @ZacharyBrennan endpts.com/threes-company…
List price reduction for Lantus starts Jan 2024.

Lillypad announced that it is launching a Lantus equivalent biosimilar at 78% discount to Lantus starting April 1, 2023. And it’s also interchangeable with Lantus.
Sanofi has already a Lantus authorized generic at 70% discount to Lantus launched last year. Let the price drops due to competition begin! It’s good for patients.

Wow. This is huge. This is the real @LillyPad

Eli Lilly cuts insulin price to $35. An issue many of us have been advocating so hard for. #insulin4all nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna7…
The cap automatically applies to patients on private insurance.

The Inflation Reduction Already capped out of pocket cost to $35 for Medicare Part D recipients.

Huge: People without insurance will pay $35 if they sign up for Eli Lilly’s copay assistance program.
I hope all other insulin manufacturers especially @SanofiUS and @novonordiskus do the same.

This is just in time for @PayorDieFilm premiering March 11 and will shine a light on the huge amount of suffering patients have endured for years due to the cost of insulin.

Insulin cost in America shines a light on how broken our healthcare and prescription drug pricing is.

If insulin can be priced high, then anything in healthcare can be priced high. Fixing this needs a lot more than band aids.

Insulin will cost no more than $35 per month starting 2023 for Medicare beneficiaries thanks to the #InflationReductionAct

Unfortunately the $35 cap won’t apply to those on private insurance. It was blocked by a procedural move. cnbc.com/amp/2022/08/09…
About 1 in 5 diabetics needing insulin who have private insurance are estimated to spend more than $35 per month out of pocket for insulin and could have been helped.

grid.news/story/politics…
Over 400,000 people on private insurance /uninsured in the US were estimated to spend at least 40% of their income (outside of food and housing) on insulin costs.

I am not sure if that number is smaller or bigger now. healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/hl…

Once Medicare can negotiate, how much would I cut the list price of Top 10 drugs that Medicare spends a lot of money on?

90%.

Even if you slash prices by 90%, these drugs will still be far more expensive than in India (for same drug or generic).
Forget India.

Take Europe. For #1 drug on the list Eliquis look at cost difference below. You could cut the price by half and the drug will still be twice as expensive in the US. Why Medicare should negotiate. statista.com/statistics/113…
What about Revlimid the #2 drug we spend the most money on?

Well it’s about $18,000 a month in the US. $115 in India and you choose from ~18 generics.

But it’s not just India. See below. statista.com/statistics/123…

While patients with diabetes may feel let down and disappointed there are some reasons for hope for lower priced modern analog insulins.

1) @CivicaRx a non profit drug manufacturer is working to manufacture insulin.
2) California announced it will manufacture insulin. @reoxoo cnbc.com/amp/2022/07/08…
3) The US plan to keep insulin price to $35 for Medicare beneficiaries is still intact. It is part of the historic healthcare reforms passed yesterday.

57 votes is more than I thought. But unfortunately it did not pass for those with private insurance. Needed 60 votes because of the point of order. Capping insulin to $35 is not going to happen for those with insurance.
Still hoping for a miracle. @DemFromCT — your comment gives me some hope.

If you want to know how powerful Pharma lobbying is, look no further than insulin.#Insulin4All

Though insulin costs 10 times more than in other countries, is needed for survival in diabetes, despite countless articles written, let’s see how many oppose capping the price to $35.
Insulin prices compared to prices of other things we use as well illustrated by @lollydaggle years ago.

Some states have acted. have introduced the oxymoronic idea of “authorized generics”. But we need a national solution.
Insulin is the Achilles heel of Pharma and PBMs. There is absolutely no justification.

Pharma is really good at creating narratives with half-truths (or just outright lies) that narrow the policy space to their desired outcome.

So good that even @jacobin- a rare US socialist magazine-has accidentally repeated a few of their greatest hits. A (gentle) correction 🧵1
Let's unpack this:

"The sheer complexity of insulin production makes it financially unviable for generic companies. Thus, instead of generic insulin, we speak of biosimilar insulin — a biosimilar is a biologic drug that is extremely similar but not identical to the original." 2
First, generic insulin markets are 100% financially viable. I hate to be that academic that says "I have a paper on that" but
gh.bmj.com/content/3/5/e0…

We assume a 10% profit margin (which is more than average) & estimate costs at ~$3/vial for NPH + $5 for glargine. V. viable! 3

This is not a more fancy insulin in the US. It's the same kind of insulin that's sold in other countries for much less, even by the same companies. @TheEconomist

When Medicare cannot negotiate this is what happens:

Revlimid price per month
~$4,500 in 2005
~$18,500 in 2022

This happens with numerous drugs. Not possible in any other country. @DavidP4AD oversight.house.gov/sites/democrat…

Why would companies innovate when they can meet investor expectations by increasing the price of old drugs?

This pathway slows the number of innovative drugs are launched. Stopping this practice will lead to more innovation not less.
Happens with old drugs. Lifesaving drugs. From insulin and beyond. #Insulin4all

I hoped we would do something. Some states have enacted emergency measures. But overall nothing meaningful has been done to lower the price of insulin in the US.
