It's two years today since then Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the setting up of a statutory public inquiry under the 2005 act into Covid-19 and his governments handling of the crisis.

What's happened since then?

🧵
It would be a further 217 days before Johnson would announce the chair into the inquiry, Barroness Hallett, on 15 December 2021 following pressure from @CovidJusticeUK and others.

Three months later on 13 March 2022 the draft terms of reference would be passed to the chair.

🧵
The inquiry held consultation events across the UK on these draft terms of reference for the PM to sign off and at long last, on 28 June 2022, over a full year since Johnson announced the inquiry, there were signed off terms of reference.

Before COVID, the #Aichi @irouren nurses were able to express their frustrations like any other worker. Now under the #StateofEmergency, they will not walk but just hold a presser and engage the social media. #看護の日
#看護は自己犠牲じゃない
Leading up to the presser, @irouren & labor unions nationwide unleashed a fierce SNS campaign expressing the anger & frustration of the nurses on the field, gathering almost 0.5M tweets to date. This nurse exclaimed, “WE ARE NOT DISPOSABLE PAWNS!” #看護は自己犠牲じゃない
But despite the fierce protest, the Japan Nursing Association reportedly succumbed to the demands of the #Tokyo2020 organizers to ‘secure’ 500 nurses for the Games. #Aichi @irouren have rejected saying, “It is unimaginable: one sick-leave is rendering our operation useless!”

Today it was my turn to get vaccinated @Hopitaux_unige against #COVID19. Vaccines save lives. It’s critical to get them to all counties A.S.A.P. If like me you live in a country where vaccines are available, please get vaccinated when it’s your turn.
To make vaccines available to all who need them, governments, manufacturers and other stakeholders must commit to share and produce more doses of #COVID19 vaccines to protect everyone. #VaccinEquity
Glad to have the opportunity on #InternationalNursesDay to thank nurses at @Hopitaux_unige who have been working throughout the #COVID19 pandemic. My thanks, admiration and respect for all nurses all over the world. #SupportHealthCareWorkers

Time for a pulp countdown, and as it's #InternationalNursesDay here's my top 10 strangest settings for nurse romance novels!

Seriously, did you think they were all set in hospitals?
At #10: nurse in society! Privilege and palliatives amongst the well-to-do and the well-to-dont..
At #9: nurse in a TV studio. Oh the heartache and danger of being an, er, erm, what do producers actually do again?

Today is #InternationalNursesDay. Nurses have been at the core of the #COVID19 response providing life-saving care and, in so many heartbreaking cases, they are there in the last moments of a person’s life. To nurses everywhere, thank you for your tireless commitment!
In this Year of the Health and Care Worker, the #COVID19 pandemic has reminded all of us how much we all depend on nurses, from our first day to our last, and why all countries must invest in nurses now and for the future. #InternationalNursesDay #SupportHealthCareWorkers
Nurses provide essential care in so many areas of our health systems, but we also need their skills and experience in leadership positions, including in senior roles for developing health policies and designing integrated patient-centred health services. #InternationalNursesDay

Today is World Nursing Day, and I think we could all get behind a hashtag like #ThankYouNurses. But India's nursing staff need more than that, to keep fighting the second wave.
Few of us have any idea how much physical and psychological strain nurses have been enduring. A thread.
1. Before the pandemic, nursing as a profession was given little respect, *severely* underpaid, and thus understaffed across the country.
I spoke to Usha Krishna Kumar, of the Nurses' Welfare Association, on how we can support nurses better:
@thewire_in
2. The daily demands in Covid wards, ICUs, but also home-care, are shattering - tending to routine care, medical crises and deaths, every day, all in full PPE in the summer heat.
What reward do many nurses receive for risking their lives to save ours? Rs 15,000-20,000 per month.

This #CharityTuesday, to mark #InternationalNursesDay, we are highlighting the work of @TheQNI and their network of community nurses, health visitors and midwives.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, district nurses have been instrumental in helping those in need at home.
🌡 Over recent weeks, nurses have been redeployed from their normal roles to work in the community.

@TheQNI has set-up an online Coronavirus Information Centre to help this transition, with “rapid training plans” for those who are working in home settings for the first time.
The Queen succeeded Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother as Patron of @TheQNI in 2002. In 2019, @TheQNI was recognised as the oldest nursing charity in the world.

The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Award is still given to community nurses who provide exceptional care.

(1/16) It’s #InternationalNursesDay. My earlier thread on WWI facial reconstruction prompted a remark that women back then happily sat at home while their men fought. Not true. Women were an integral part of the war effort. Here’s my THREAD 👇 in honour of these brave volunteers.
(2/16) Never before had the world faced such slaughter. During WWI, medical staff applied 1.5 million splints, administered 1,088 million doses of drugs, fitted over 20,000 artificial eyes & used 7,250 tons of cotton wool while applying 108 million bandages to injured combatants.
(3/16) More than 6,000 medical staff would die, & over 17,000 would be wounded in the British Army alone. No matter how extensive healthcare provisions were or how hard doctors and nurses worked, medical care was consistently overwhelmed the sheer number of wounded men.

This International Nurses Day is a good reminder of the vital role nurses play in the society. We particularly celebrate nurses who go deep into hard-to-reach communities to help people access primary healthcare.

#InternationalNursesDay
Nurses are strong. But more important is their ability to be a leading voice in advocating quality healthcare provision as a principal human right in every nation of the world. Health is for everybody!

#NursesLead #AVoiceToLead #HealthIsAHumanRight #InternationalNursesDay2018
We agree with the theme of the International Council of Nurses for this year's International Nurses Day:
"Nurses A Voice To Lead - Health Is A Human Right"
Nurses can inspire change in the society.
