Det är svårt att föreställa sig om det som sker i Kina. Uppenbarligen samlar de in dissidenter.

One popular reasoning given to shut internet down is that it stops the spread of #misinformation and rumours. We did a poll to see how many of us believe in it.
The results show that over 79% poll takers believed that an #internetshutdown doesn't stop the circulation of #disinformation. What it does stop is the flow of critical information and counter speech which can be effective in countering disinformation.
We believe that an Internet shutdown is a #violation of our
constitutionally guaranteed #FreedomOfSpeech and expression. Help us keep our fight against Internet shutdowns alive. #sflcin #letthenetwork #keepiton #digitaldefenders

Justice NV Ramana cites Charles Dickens as he starts his judgment.

Although cherished in our heart as a “Paradise on Earth”, the history of this beautiful land is etched with violence and militancy. While the mountains of Himalayas spell tranquillity, yet blood is shed every day.

Many think that the SC judgment on #internetshutdown is weak because of the lack of an effective direction striking down the shut down orders. While that is true, I think the SC has moved the jurisprudence forward in a progressive manner 1/n
They have (1) recognised the right to internet access is a fundamental right, (2) that all orders authorising shut downs and s 144 orders have to be published, unless the government claims privilege (this is HUGE - a huge fight in the SC was about getting access to orders) 2/n
(3) they have recognised that an indefinite shut down is not sustainable (will have to see actual language of the judgment around that). (4) telecom suspension rules are inadequate and have gaps - hence review procedure under telegraph act seems to have been incorporated 3/n

After the heroic sacrifices of valiant & ordinary citizens, the leadership of @_AfricanUnion is about to sit in idle complicity as the soldiers in the Transitional Military Council (TMC) launch a violent & bloody #SudanCounterRevolution. #Africans everywhere shd weigh in
Here is the #SitRep: Since the end of last month, the soliders in the TMC have been launched a rolling #InternetShutdown on Khartoum with the design to facilitate a #SudanCounterRevolution by constraining & ultimately cutting off the ability of the protests to co-ordinate
At the beginning of the week, on Monday, 3 June, about 05:00hrs Khartoum time, the TMC sent 1000s of armed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) soldiers, the Janjaweed militia & men in police uniforms using RSF trucks to disperse the sit-in.

1/ NEW WORKING PAPER on #InternetShutdown-s and protest in #India based on thousands of data points from 2016. Bottom line: shutdowns are followed by a clear *increase* in violent protest & have very ambiguous effects on peaceful demonstrations. #KeepItOn…
2/ India has recorded by far the highest number of shutdowns of any country in the 🌏 - a staggering 134 (per @NetShutdowns) just last year, largely in an attempt to quash protest. What this paper shows is that this kind of repression does not achieve what it sets out to achieve.
3/ I used data from @ACLEDINFO+@icews on 1000s of violent & non-violent events, teasing out categories of organizing parties. AFAIK this is the 1st statistical analysis of large-scale blackouts and offline dissent at this scale, in the country where they happen the most - #India.

Over 1 week since #DRCDecides2018, the world still awaits the results as election officials in the country have decided to postpone presidential election results while the Catholic Church says there has been a very clear winner…
Meanwhile, following a well-worn pattern of rigging #AfricanElections & to enable it control the results process in #DRCDecides2018, the govt in the DRC has imposed a shutdown on digital services, including SMS, micro-blogging & WhatsApp…
The #InternetShutdown in #DRCDecides2018 has triggered 2 related fears. One is that the govt of @Plaid_Kabila has a “plan to obscure the truth of the ballot box” & the other is that there'll be serious violence (PEV), once manipulated results are announced…
