So, today is #IntersexAwarenessDay.

Intersex people like me are born outside of binary gender. There is a wide range of how that presents, but we are neither male nor female by traditional definitions - down to our very biology.

This is me. Every day of the year. 🏳️‍🌈 A colorful yellow and purple logo for Intersex awareness day
A side bonus of how I am #intersex involves my voice. It gives me a range a little like Farinelli. I don’t normally brag about that, but a few years ago, together with @NoxArcana, we co-wrote a song designed specifically to show off my four octave range:
A difficult side of being born intersex is the fact that we are still grossly misunderstood. Our natural state is often perceived as a medical anomaly that must be fixed.

This means many of us undergo non-consensual and mutilating surgeries throughout infancy and childhood.

🎉 Happy #IntersexAwarenessDay!

🌍 Intersex people have always existed, but today they often face a mixture of ignorance and discrimination.

🧵 Here are eight facts to know 👇
❓ The definition

☂️ #Intersex is an umbrella term for people with sex characteristics – chromosome patterns, genitals, gonads – outside the binary of male and female bodies.

👶 The traits are sometimes visible at birth, but might not appear until puberty – or not at all.
🔢 The numbers

🌎 Around 1.7% of the global population is thought to be born with an intersex condition.

👨‍🦰 This is almost the same as those who are born with red hair

💡 However, many don't realise they are intersex until later in life.

Intersex refers to biological characteristics and is different to gender identity or sexual orientation - you can be a heterosexual intersex woman, a lesbian intersex enby, a bi intersex man, for example.

A few weeks until #IntersexAwarenessDay. I’ll be sharing links to podcasts/activists/films/support/advice/research during the lead up.

Some resources can be found here through @interACT_adv: interactadvocates.org/intersex-aware…
After years of activism, I have decided not to just use one term. Language is not something that’s easily accessible or understood across time and culture. Different terminology is sometimes needed when addressing particular issues.
“Intersex” is not a widely accepted medical term (anymore). But Intersex is mostly used across human rights.

It’s just one of the terms. I tend to prefer neutral language that is accessible for different languages, cultures, generations and variations.

Hierzu Operationen an Kindern👉 tagesspiegel.de/gesellschaft/q… /3

Today is Intersex Awareness Day! Intersex people are individuals born with any of several variations in sex characteristics including chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones, or genitals that do not fit the typical definitions for male or female bodies.
#IntersexAwarenessDay
Such variations may involve genital ambiguity and combinations of chromosomal genotype and sexual phenotype other than XY-male and XX-female.⁣
Around the world and even in Nigeria, intersex children are forced into medically unnecessary surgeries (read up on: intersex genital mutilation) without their consent so that they can be ‘fixed’ to fit into the binary.
