What I have said might suggest a rare—even rarified— minority interest of little concern to the mass of believers, so it is important to emphasise that Sufism has penetrated the whole body of Islam.

A Sufi brotherhood is called a tariqah (its plural is turuq), meaning “path” or “way”. Whereas in Christianity mysticism has been largely confined to the monasteries, the turuq have played an important role in Islamic history.

In the main it was Sufis who converted the Turks to Islam (with tremendous historical repercussions) and also the Indonesians (who make up the largest Islamic nation today).

The word Algebra's history dates way back 825 AD to the Islamic golden age. The Islamic golden age was an intellectual primetime in the Middle East centred in Baghdad.
During this time, many great Arabic scholars rose. A library known as the House of Wisdom was established to translate essential works of literature from diverse languages, including Chinese and Sanskrit, into Arabic.

There's a beautiful story on this about Imam Bukhari...

Once he boarded a boat with a heavy bag of money. A troublemaker noted this & shouted "Someone has stolen my bag of money!"

He hoped they'd find the bag with Imam Bukhari, accuse him of theft and he'd get the money.
The captain ordered a search of all cabins but no bag of money was found. They rou doy abused the troublemaker and went about their business.

Later on the journey, the troublemaker asked imam bukhari what happened to the bag of money. How come no one found it?
I threw it overboard the minute I heard you shouting and realised what you were doing.

The troublemaker couldn't believe it. You threw away a bag of money?

"You fool", said the Imam. "My reputation is worth more than a bag of money."
