So @kyledubas's signing to head hockey operations with the @penguins is quite suggestive as to what went down in #LeafsForever land.

There may have been financial issues. There may have been family issues. Most of all, however, were issues of control and autonomy.
My speculation is that Dubas found himself taking responsibility (and pressure) for decisions he was not alone in making (and that were subject to veto). If everyone was going to hold him accountable for those decisions, he wanted those decisions to be his.
Thus when Dubas's agent approached Brendan Shanahan with a revised contract, Shanahan concluded that Dubas wanted much more control at Shanahan's expense.

Shanahan wasn't willing to give that up.

With the annoucement that the #Isles will be playing a Stadium Series game next year (I am soooo tempted ...) comes the realization that there will have to be a new sweater design.

And we know what that means for Isles fans.
Some folks should be happy: the return of the Fisherman this year should mean no Fisherman next year.

That said, the continued neglect of the lighthouse secondary logo is a shame.

As the home team, the #Isles should be wearing a blue or orange sweater. Yes, orange.
I'd use the lighthouse as the main crest and relegate the regular crest to the shoulders. No need for new crests.

BTW, I really liked the Stadium Series sweaters used last time. I think the current alternate is not as compelling. But there could be some improvement.

We are days away from the first round of the #StanleyCupPlayoffs. In many ways the first round is the one that is special and different. All that breaking news ... all those updates ... all those upsets.

Today is the anniversary of my favorite first round day ... in 1982.
In those days the first round was a best of 5 round, and on April 13, 1982, there were three such games to be played to finish that first round.

Each of the three series had come down to deciding games with the three best teams in the league playing at home.
In Montreal, the Canadiens, the third best team in the regular season, faced off against the Quebec Nordiques.

In Edmonton, the Oilers, the second best team in the regular season, were confronting the LA Kings.

It's a misread of events as they unfolded that holds that #Isles fans were harboring real hopes about signing Johnny Gaudreau or trading for Matthew Tkachuk.

Oh, "insiders" played with our emotions for a few hours, but it's now clear Gaudreau was never signing with NYI.
We've had an upgrade on the blue line (Romanov) but other holes remain to be filled ... and are best filled through trades.

For a team with four solid centers, Kadri's a problematic pickup.
It's clear that the #Isles have three assets that might be useful in a trade: 12, 18, and 40.

Who else might you consider trading that someone else would want outside of a blockbuster?

There's also the looming fear that Barzal follows in Tavares's footsteps.

The story of the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes is one of a series of poor ownership decisions and a poor choice of venue in the move to Glendale. It's not one of fans unwilling to support a team, but alienated by the continuing instability and poor decisions.
The ASU location is far from ideal, to put it mildly. Should the team not get the green light to build at its proposed site in Tempe, for all the talk of Plan B, I suspect that relocation will be on the table.
Although I once got into a pointed discussion about the location of the team from a devoted West Valley advocate on a disastrous first (and only) date (but there were free tickets!), the location issue is key, and the Glendale arena, while serviceable, was not inspiring.

In remembering Mike Bossy today, many #Isles and hockey fans will remember the game in which he scored twice in the third period to equal Maurice Richard's 50 goals in the first 50 games standard.

What you may forget is that he had a chance to break it.
Bryan Trottier had set up Bossy for the record-tying goal ... the one played and replayed all the time. He had also started the play that led to goal #49 for Bossy ... both goals coming with less than five minutes to go.

That made the score NYI 6, QUE 4. BTW, both teams were then penalized for too many men on the ice.

Bossy and Trottier remained out on the ice for 4 on 4 hockey.

Stefan Persson broke into the Nords' zone and hit Bossy with a pass as the winger raced down the slot.

I must have been one of the first #Isles fans to know about Mike Bossy. Heck, I may have known about him before there was a New York Islanders.

Let me explain.
During my time at Exeter I worked with the hockey program in various capacities, largely because coach George Crowe worked on recruiting players from elsewhere.

Among those recruits were a pair of brothers from the Montreal area ... Brian and Dave Bossy.
Brian was a tough scoring forward while Dave was a big defenseman.

One time they were talking about a cousin who was tearing it up back home as a teenager. For some reason that conversation stuck with me.

• WHAT IF: NHL TEAM WERE SOCCER TEAMS •
As a Brazilian hockey and soccer fan who likes soccer jerseys and loves to see jersey concepts for hockey I couldn't help but to wonder how they would look like and since I didn't find something like that I created one for each team! Image
Disclaimers: soccer jerseys usually have a sponsor and since we don't have that in NHL I simply used the helmet sponsors (for those cool guys that don't have one like Avs and Flyers I used the one from arena naming rights)

Teams are in abbreviation order!

Ok let's go!

It's pretty simple but I think it looks fine, didn't want to mess something Image

When it comes to discussions about structuring the postseasons of professional sports, there's a tension between wanting to enlarge the field and giving better teams more significant advantages reflecting regular season achievements.
I think that if you enlarge the postseason, you might want to shorten the regular season, because you've devalued it. But I don't think you need to construct artificial advantages for better teams.

If you want better teams to win, restrict the postseason.
Take hockey. Say goodbye to the divisions. Construct balanced schedules (3 games versus each of 15 conference opponents, home/away versus each of the teams in the opposite conference [32 games]). That gets you to 77 games. That's enough.

OTD in 1959, after taking a shot from Andy Bathgate in the nose, Jacques Plante leaves the game & returns wearing a mask.

This is a (mega) thread to Plante & to the mask wearers who followed. Some great goalies/masks do not appear & some appear more than once.

As the #Isles embark on their journey through the conference finals, I'd like to share a pertinent memory of a game against Arizona over a decade ago.
Before the game @GregLogan1 and I had dinner with another fam at Westgate, which seemed like a model for the Lighthouse concept ... and now @UBSArena.
Greg's a terrific guy who can talk about nearly anything.
In that night's game, Hilary Duff watched as Doug Weight scored his 1000th point on an assist on a Richard Park goal.

Another Islander scored his first ever NHL goal, which had been a long time coming.

Josh Bailey.

And now here we are. #LGI

Folks, @realmikemilbury is ... Mike Milbury. He's an uneven analyst who says ignorant things. See @Jeremy_Roenick or @CoachsCornerDC. He was like this as a player, coach, and GM (ask #Isles fans). It was a stupid comment. What else is new?

Why is he there in the first place?
After all, he's this guy:

Both @NHLonNBCSports and @NHLNetwork have people who can do the job professionally. I learn from them. It's time to upgrade.

Forty years ago it was a Saturday afternoon in Madison, Wisconsin. I had just finished my first year of graduate school.

I turned on my television to CBS. To my surprise, CBS had decided to televise Game 6 of the 1980 Stanley Cup Final.
Of course, to me this was no typical Stanley Cup Final. This year my New York Islanders were battling for the Cup in the Final for the first time.

Theme song?

I had grown up a New York Rangers fan through the 1972 Stanley Cup Final, when they had lost to Bobby Orr's Boston Bruins. That was my first year of prep school in New Hampshire. I was crushed. I had gone to a hockey camp run by @rodgilbert7 and Brad Park, so it felt personal.

You've seen this many times ... but look (and listen) again.

Some notes:

1. This is the US CBS feed. Usually replays of this event use the Canadian feed, but it was Dan Kelly and Lou Nanne who brought this play to those of us in the USA.

Whole feed?

2. The beginning of the play due to Nystrom's forechecking, which forced the Flyers to clear the puck out of the zone to create the turnover.

3. Stefan Persson appears to have played that loose puck before Lorne Henning picks it up.

Time for a little story about a boy, his first hockey hero, and his hero's hero ... featuring @rodgilbert7 ...
When I first became really interested in ice hockey in 1969, there was only one team in New York ... the Rangers.

That's right, before the #Isles appeared, there was only one way to #PlayLikeANewYorker ...

... and the New Yorker I followed was #7, Rod Gilbert.
My mom secured a copy of his autobiography, co-written with @StanFischler, and I devoured it. Yes, Stan, I still have it. Goal: My Life on Ice.

When I went to my first game at MSG, guess who scored the first NHL goal I ever saw? That's right ... Rod Gilbert.

#LetsGoDucks
Atención a: Ondrej Kase

Tiene un historial de lesiones preocupante pero siempre es un jugador que destaca. Anaheim necesitará de su talento goleador para salir del pozo.
