NCGOP ties to NC Sons of Confederate Veterans & white supremacy agenda go deep.

Deeper than just confed flags & white power shouts at #NCGOP rallies.
Deeper than a couple dozen campaign donations.

Really deep.

Been a long fall for NC GOP to being a foremost US white supremacy political party.

In 1870, it was #NCpol Republican Constable Wyatt Outlaw that took reasonable, non-lethal action against KKK.

Today's #NCGOP mocks Outlaw's subsequent lynching.
2/

We all know 19th century KKK were Dems, Repubs freed slaves.

We know bc GOP always tells us. Forest did it. So did Hawthorne.

Bc they don't have much else to say about race in polite company.

Bc today #NCGOP is a white supremacy party, #ncpol.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get this out on #JUNETEENTH2020 but to celebrate let's give an extra special hello to a neo-Nazi we've been tracking for awhile now! Say hello to Gordon MacKenzie of Jeffersonville, Indiana and member of NSC-131's Dixie Chapter :-)! [Long Thread]
1/
26 year old "Gordy" was born and raised in Issaquah, Washington and lived in Costa Mesa, California before moving to Jeffersonville Indiana. Most of what we know of Gordy comes from his neo-Nazi instagram where he uses the screenname "Gabb3r".
2/
Gordy's Instagram shows the chilling journey of his radicalization and movement through several white supremacist groups. Unfortunately for Gordy, he also left various remements of his pre-Nazi life, such as pictures/interactions with friends, that allowed us to identify him.

Relaxed atmosphere at todayā€™s #BlackLivesMatter protest in Hyde Park. Slightly contentious moment though when the compere hushed a ā€œfuck Borisā€ chant, arguing we shouldnā€™t be directing hostile chants towards someone to whom weā€™re appealing for political change.
This points to the question every social movement has to confront: whatā€™s the agency that can deliver the change we want, what leverage do we have over it, and how can we use that leverage to force the change?
The #JUNETEENTH2020 strikes in the USA, and historic struggles like the 1968 Memphis sanitation workersā€™ strike, show how organised labour can be a strategic anti-racist actor, connecting workplace struggles to wider social struggles for equality.

This #Juneteenth, we want to take a moment to honor a few influential black PC, tech and gaming pioneers who have touched our lives in ways we never knew...

#TechHistory #JUNETEENTH2020
First up, Jerry Lawson.

He pioneered the video game cartridge for the Fairchild Channel F system, the first gaming console that utilized interchangeable cartridges back in the 70s. It never saw the popularity like the Atari VCS or the NES but, its influence is undeniable. ImageImage
Following Jerry Lawson's work, Ed Smith co-designed an early cartridge-based video game system, the APF MP-1000 (1978) for APF Electronics.

He also worked on its computer attachment, the Imagination Machine, which competed with products from Apple and Atari in the late 1970s. Image

While I'm enjoying the newfound interest in celebrating #JUNETEENTH2020, let's not forget exactly what we're celebrating.
Juneteenth isn't the day African Americans were freed from slavery.
It's the day when African Americans FOUND OUT they had been freed from slavery.
The Civil War was over, Lee had surrendered at Appomattox and the defeated Confederates retreated back home to their farms and their plantations, knowing that they had lost and that the reason for the war, African American slavery, had come to an end.
But once back home, knowing their world had changed, did the white slave masters release their black slaves and wish them good luck? Or even try to negotiate a paid position for the men and women who fed them, provided their living and took care of their children?

Today is Juneteenth, emancipation day. Happy Jubilee Day to everyone! Happy Emancipation Day.

On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas with the news slavery has ended and the slaves were free.

#JUNETEENTH2020
#JuneteenthDay
We celebrate this day as a community because it sparked one of the biggest changes to the lives of ALL Americans. Finally, black people across the Country were free. Though the changes were not immediate, and we still fight for equal rights, it was the first true beginning.
It led us to the right to vote, the right to a full education, and the right to marry who we love.

Today, we celebrate. This is a day of reflection, education and solidarity. We educate our children and show them why we have hope. Hope for unity.

THREAD: On this weekend of #fathersday and #JUNETEENTH2020 I have thoughts about George Floyd's horrific lynching and #blackromance (something that people have also been discussing, that is a romance between 2 Black people) 1/?
Many of you know that I have been engaged in research regarding the African American hero in romance in these past few years. One of the things that doesn't get discussed enough how much economics has to do with romance and that I believe that the decline of the AA hero 2/?
has everything to do with economics. It's no small thing that George Floyd lost his life over a so called counterfeit $20 bill. Statistics for Black male unemployment, incarceration and opportunity all converge to create a difficulty for fans of romance to be able to see 3/?

155 years ago, the last slaves in the U.S. were freed.

They were promised "40 acres & a mule," a path to financial independence. But this promise was broken, ultimately depriving Black Americans hundreds of billions worth of wealth.
nfu.org/2020/06/19/junā€¦ #JUNETEENTH2020
As a result, many former slaves were forced into sharecropping. Landowners were known to charge unfairly high interest rates and intentionally underpay sharecroppers, keeping them in an endless cycle of debt and poverty.

npr.org/sections/codesā€¦
Despite significant obstacles, Black Americans managed to acquire 15 million acres of land by 1910. At the time, 14% of farmers were Black.

But today, only 1.3% of farmers are Black, and they only own .52% of farmland. How did that happened?

Happy #JuneteenthDay2020 !!

After talking with a couple neighbors, it became apparent that this holiday is new to many non-Black citizens.

An annual #holiday, #juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s.

Some (very general) common traditions include:

2/
ā¤ļø Dressing in your ā€˜Sunday Bestā€™ and/or wearing the color red; also common in some areas is wearing all white clothing.

ā¤ļø Rodeos, block parties, cook-outs, parades, concerts, singing and dancing.

1/x On this Juneteeth day, I want to step back a moment and talk briefly about, not the day itself, but how close we came to that day never coming to pass when it did. #HappyJuneteenth #JUNETEENTH2020
2/x From 1850 to 1861, there were about 150 proposals for a 13th Amendment that would have made it unconstitutional to abolish slavery. In other words, while the post-war 13th Amendment abolished slavery, the pre-war versions would have done the opposite.
3/x That 150 number is not a typo. Those in favor of slavery tried really, really, really hard to write it more explicitly into the Constitution. The fact that they didnā€™t succeed was not for a lack of trying and they almost succeeded.

Today, we celebrate the liberation of Black people in America. For those who donā€™t know the history, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that the last formerly enslaved people found out they were free. Learn more here: s.si.edu/2YNBo24
In this critical moment in our country, it is important to remember that freedom was not granted by any one person. It was a hard-fought battle, won through uprisings, revolts, and many sacrifices.
The fight for freedom wasnā€™t over and done with in 1865 -- freedom and justice for all is still being fought in the streets today.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, #Juneteenth specifically refers to June 19, 1865ā€”the day that 250,000 enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom after Union General Gordon Granger arrived and announced Lincoln's proclamation. 3/10
