Based on the assessment of the technical team in the MOHW and after consultation with the technical team at the PAHO/WHO on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, I am now advising the Public that Jamaica is declaring community transmission of the SARS-CoV2 virus.

Community transmission means the inability to relate confirmed cases through chains of transmission for a large number of cases, and the increasing positive tests through sentinel samples especially from persons coming to health centres and hospitals.

As the country may be aware, the Government of Jamaica, based on the information provided by the @themohwgovjm through its continued monitoring and surveillance exercises for COVID-19, has instituted the quarantine of communities within St. Thomas & Clarendon.
The St. Thomas communities include Bamboo River, Church Corner and Summit. To date, the MOHW has conducted more than 300 home visits and collected over 700 samples.

At MOHW press briefing, Min Tufton reports that there were 6 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hrs, bringing the total number of #COVID19 cases in #Jamaica to 1071. 3 are contacts of confirmed cases; 3 are still under investigation. #JaCovid19

Dr Hamilton says that the National Lab was on target to clear the backlog, but didn't receive the necessary reagents to do so. A large shipment of kits is due next week, which will allow for the testing to clear the backlog. #COVID19 #JaCovid19 #Jamaica

I am happy to report that over the last 48 hours, EIGHT (8) more persons have recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 57.
CURRENT CASE NUMBERS

In the last 24 hours, five additional persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Jamaica.

There are now 478 confirmed cases on the island.

Jamaica now has 105 confirmed cases of COVID-19. This follows 32 new additions over the last 24 hours.
The new cases are comprised of five males and 27 females, who range in age from 19 to 70 years old. The cases are from St Catherine, and Kingston and St Andrew.
This brings to 34 the number of cases under investigation.

Of the remaining 71 confirmed cases:
• Thirty-one (31) are imported;
• Thirty-four (34) are contacts of a confirmed case; and
• Six (6) are local transmission (not epi linked).
