Today's #DesignerSeries installment is going to be on a favorite of mine, Stephen Webster. #JewelWatch

He was a wunderkind when he was younger, now more of an elder statesman.
I've actually watched some interviews with him, and he's chill, articulate, and talented.

He also got a knighthood.
Born in the UK in 1959, he knocked around a little, studying, then returned to the UK and founded a shop in London in 1989.

During all that he won a couple design awards from DeBeers. Can't find that particular piece, so have a couple others.

Today's #DesignerSeries choice is Suzanne Syz, a woman of beauty and humor who apparently doesn't want much data out on line about her, so we'll respect that. #JewelWatch

She's based in Switzerland. Image
She works with an art business model, mostly. Meaning she produces individual pieces that are one of a kind, and sold at those prices.

In some cases artists also have a manufactured line that they design for, we'll be seeing both.

This is the piece that got my attention. Image
She's famous? Notorious? For her rings. They are fabulous, and extremely varied. ImageImageImageImage

Bracelets! Bracelets are so much more diverse than you'd imagine. Well, some of you. So yeah, let's do something other than brood and eat ice cream. #JewelWatch

First? The bangle. Thin/narrow, circular, and often worn in multiples. No bending allowed.
Wait, am I naming jewelers on this? Bottom row up there is Koulis, left, and Amrapali right.
The chain bracelet, which is just what it says. I don't have many of those because they bore me, except for a few with center-pieces.

Verdura, Ippolita, antique moonstone and sapphire, Leane.

So, pearls. #JewelWatch

Y'know how English has 1066 (French/Norman invasion of England), and textiles have 1856 (invention of synthetic dyes)?

Pearls have 1893. The first cultured pearl.
It wasn't until the 1920s that they got the whole thing to be 'commercially viable', but that was the day the entire pearl market was thrown into chaos, and when it became all about the tech.

It was Kokichi Mikimoto who invented them.
Yes, THAT Mikimoto, jeweler to the Imperial Family of Japan, and Maker Of Really Well Designed Stuff. Founded 1888, which is downright recent by Japanese standards. The most obvious sign of high tech in their work, is the precision and craftsmanship.

Okay, fuck it, we all need to chill out more than we need a 24 hour poll. Looks like the emeralds are winning (41%) and I know I have a bunch of emerald fans out there, so here we go. #JewelWatch

Chopard, Nunn, and the bottom two are Yue. A garden to wear. ImageImageImageImage
The focal points are the fire opal monarchs leaving the chrysaliseseseses, but the emeralds in the posts of the earrings and loop of the pendant are nice. (Smirti) Image
That remains one of my favorite suites of all time.

Anyway.

Emeralds and aquamarines. From Boghossian. Never been able to decide if I like them or not, but they're nice stones. Image
