🧵(1/3) This Sunday, I remember the sacrifice, resolve and determination of those who faced brutal attacks by law enforcement and White vigilante groups as they sought to march from Selma to Montgomery for the right to register and #vote.
Led by #HoseaWilliams, #JohnLewis, #AmeliaBoynton, and others, this momentous day in #CivilRights history, known as #BloodySunday, “galvanized public opinion and highly influenced the passing by Congress and signing into law by #PresidentJohnson #TheVotingRightsActof1965. (2/3)
Let us not allow the clock to be turned back.

Edmond Pettus was born #OTD in 1821 in Limestone County, Alabama. He served as an officer in the Confederate Army and as a US senator after the War. He was also active in the Ku Klux Klan, serving as its Grand Dragon in Alabama. He is the namesake of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Born into an enslaving family, Pettus built a successful law career before enlisting in the Confederate Army when war broke out. While most of his home region of northern Alabama did not support secession, Pettus did. He was a pro-slavery ideologue steered by white supremacy.
During the War he rose to the rank of Brig. General and was captured as a POW three times. He was pardoned by Andrew Johnson on October 30, 1865. Pettus returned to Selma after the War and resumed his law practice.

A year ago today, we lost Congressman John Lewis. As we celebrate the king of good trouble—his legacy of perseverance; his ability to find moments of joy and lightness in the midst of real struggle—we should also recommit ourselves to building the future he envisioned.
All across our country, the sacred right to vote that he marched and bled for is being threatened. That’s why we’ve got to do everything in our power to pass the #ForThePeopleAct and the #JohnLewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Everyone deserves to have their voices heard and their votes counted, and I can’t think of a better way to honor Congressman Lewis than by turning these bills into law.

Wow. Powerful call from @POTUS to pass the #ForThePeopleAct and the #JohnLewis #VotingRightsAct and send them to his desk “right away.” What would these bills do? A lot. #JointAddress #JointSession
👉 First, they would guarantee the freedom to vote, and take a huge bite out of the wave of voter suppression laws sweeping the country, as explained here: brennancenter.org/sites/default/…
👉Modernize voter registration
👉Restore voting rights to the formerly incarcerated
👉Expand opportunities for early + mail voting
👉Require use of voter-verified paper ballots
👉Restore the full power of the landmark Voting Rights Act to combat discrimination.

This week, I joined with @AmbAndrewYoung, John-Miles Lewis (son of Congressman #JohnLewis), and Al Vivian (son of Rev. #CTVivian) to send a letter to CEOs of #Georgia-based corporations calling upon them to oppose anti-#voter legislation; to use their influence...
with Georgia state legislators to deter any and all bills that include #VoterSuppression and would restrict voting access, particularly for Black communities; and to urge action that would ensure our state moves forward and not back to the era of Jim Crow politics.
We also called upon these CEOs to divest from politicians who continue to suppress Georgia's voters.

Thinking over the moments that motivated me this year & how powerfully & clearly this country revealed itself. It was confirmation of all I have known, but I also learned so much more. The clarity with which I see the challenges we face has strengthened my resolve beyond measure.
It started with one of the best days ever. My journey with the #USPS this year has been kind of “how it started...how it’s going.” First, the unveiling of the #GwenIfillForever stamp in January. So grateful for this honor from the @USPS.
By November we were in a pitched battle w/the #USPS to ensure that absentee ballots were delivered on time after new postal leadership imposed measures that resulted in delivery delays in major cities. msnbc.com/msnbc/watch/sh…

I don’t want to be on this app this weekend. I popped in to see if there is any key news I don’t want to miss. Instead, I see this absolute trash of an editorial from a news outlet that had recently shown sign of being worthy of the community it serves.@Oregonian #dobetter! 1/?
If I weren’t trying to stay away from keyboards today, perhaps I’d write the op ed about the glaring privilege and utter disconnection that @Oregonian editors exhibited in writing and publishing that piece. 2/
The comfort of the white and wealthy continues to be the focus even for “free” press editors in a so-called progressive city? The O’s hollow cries for peace ignore the reality of #livingwhileBlackinOregon.

Thank goodness for independent journalists covering this moment. 3/

The #UKGovernment Torture Report

This is a very short overview of what the #UKAuthorities have done in the case.

In 2005, I set up a business selling CDs, namely mixtape CDs after graduating from Uni.

In 2006, my home was raided & my business was stopped. They said the CDs I was selling were in breach of copyright.
It was a complete shock as the exact same CDs I was selling were prevalent on most high streets and supermarkets. They were selling in their thousands in places such as #Tesco & #HMV. And #Woolworths were the actual UK Distributor of these CDs.

1/12 An open letter to The Christian Left, a “progressive online ministry” that is inflicting organized white violence against Lace Watkins, a long-time follower of @TheChristianLft and renowned Black Christian #activist bit.ly/316sAq8 #shareblackstories
2/12 Her transgression? Being a Black Christian woman who dared to question the white male co-founders of The Christian Left for profiteering off the death of Congressman #JohnLewis by appropriating his legacy of #goodtrouble.
3/12 The Christian Left refuses to #listentoblackwomen. They ban Lace and erase all of her comments. They silence anyone who kindly invites them to consider how their behavior is at odds with their stated values, which they call "concern trolling" rather than #goodtrouble.

We're so pleased to contribute to the education fund for #JohnLewis's young friend #TybreFaw. Rep Lewis asked Tybre to be part of his memorial service today. Find the story of their friendship in my linked tweet. gofundme.com/f/education-fu…
#TybreFaw was 10 when he asked his grandmothers to drive him 7 hrs to #Selma where he hoped to meet #JohnLewis. He had a sign: "Thank you #RepLewis. You have shown me how to have courage--raw courage." Lewis asked him to walk beside him across the Bridge. cnn.com/2020/07/19/pol…
#TybreFaw spent time w/ #JohnLewis on the House floor. Now 12, he plans to run for Congress himself. Nathan Morris of Boyz II Men saw CNN's video of Tybre & Lewis & followed up to see if Tybre has an education fund. He didn't. He does now! See top tweet if you'd like to pitch in.

Within the founding context of “forming a more perfect union,” @BarackObama described @repjohnlewis as a kind, gentle, and humble man and ”a battered prophet” on the “battlefield of justice.” #JohnLewis #GoodTrouble 1/7
He said #JohnLewis - as much as anyone – “brought us closer to our highest ideals” and that he is a “founding Father of that fuller, fairer America” that we have sought to attain throughout our history. #GoodTrouble 2/7
Channeling his prophetic voice, @BarackObama said that #JohnLewis showed us that “if we are willing to persevere we can make progress… b/c… “in all of us there is a longing to do what is right.” #GoodTrouble 3/7

Here's Tybre Faw reading the poem at #JohnLewis's service. I'll link to the text below.
#Mandela had a copy of Invictus in his cell during the decades he was sentenced to hard labor (chipping rocks) by the white minority gov't in South Africa for his leadership in the fight against apartheid. Morgan Freeman reads it, playing Mandela here.
Thanks so much for asking. It's been a deeply moving service, and I'm glad for the chance to share a bit from it.

3/ Many thoughts ran through my head: the comparison of Rep. Lewis to Moshe Rabbeinu. Why was Moshe chosen? He was the most humble of all men. There's a strain in Chazal that wants to make him chosen by birth. That his heritage as a Ben Levi, Ben Amram, *made* him the leader

In 2017 while working for @RepBarbaraLee I hopped on a train to Baltimore for the progressive caucus conference. After hustling to find a seat, I looked to my right and saw @RepJohnLewis quietly nibbling on his breakfast.

#JohnLewis
So many questions flooded my head, I mean I was going to be sitting next to a civil rights icon for 45 whole minutes. Should I let him be? Did he think Trump was Bull Connor 2.0? So many questions.

#JohnLewis
I waited until he finished his breakfast (home training) then leaned over and introduced myself. He waved me over so I jumped into the seat next to him geeked af. I couldn't believe it was actually happening!

Today’s #JohnLewis funeral is a fitting tribute to a patriot and an incredible gathering of American political power: 3 former presidents and a First Lady; the House Speaker; 3 women mentioned as possible future Vice Presidents; and a pastor who’s running for US Senate.
The funeral comes at a time of potentially big political change in Georgia, a state Democrats eagerly want to win in November and with two competitive Senate races that Republicans risk losing. And it’s ground zero in the ongoing battle among leaders over how to fight #COVID19.
Today’s tributes to @repjohnlewis from ex-presidents especially notable: Lewis voted against @BillClinton’s 1994 Crime Bill; boycotted @GWBLibrary’s 2000 inauguration because of the Recount. And @BarackObama likely to say that he wouldn’t have won without Lewis’s early work.
