1/ No one has to believe it, but it's a fact that Florida's elections have been badly rigged, and it's been happening for over 20 years. 🧵

2/ Gerrymandering is one of the ways that Republicans cheat. It allows them to have 2/3rds of the legislative seats when they only get about 50% of the votes.

3/ The gerrymandering is perfected to the local level, which entrenches corrupt political power because it removes accountability to voters.

The U.S. Senate has finally begun debate on the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct and #FreedomtoVoteAct.

I choose an American democracy that stands up to Trump’s Big Lie.

I choose elections free of voter suppression.

I choose protecting everyone's right to vote.
For months, Senate Democrats have been working to bring voting rights legislation like the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct and #FreedomToVoteAct to the floor of the Senate for consideration. Each time, Republicans blocked us — they wouldn’t even let us debate the bills.
Today, we are taking action to move past Republican obstruction. The debate has begun on passing legislation to strengthen our Democracy and protect voting rights.

Some worry that making changes to the filibuster (there are more than 160 already) will make the Senate more polarized—more like the House—undermining the stability of federal policy. /1
This concern is driven by how polarized our politics has grown. To prove the point, Mitch McConnell (using comic-villain language) threatened to burn down the Senate if Democrats alter the filibuster to pass critical voting & democracy reforms. /2
Of course, this concern is overblown: the filibuster has not saved the Senate from becoming dysfunctional & polarized or ensured stable federal laws and policies. /3

As the #FreedomToVote #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct makes it way to the floor today, expect a lot of disinformation and misunderstandings about what this critical democracy-saving legislation does. This thread will set the record straight. /1
2/ (1) Despite the record number of new laws this year making it harder to vote, and the persistent racial turnout gap, some claim that new voting restrictions don’t matter. @smoralesdoyle of @brennancenter buries that argument here:

Despite what some continue to argue on this website and elsewhere, the #FreedomToVoteAct (which the Senate is poised to start debating) offers an extremely robust response to the growing threat of election subversion.
The concerns being expressed focus on the risk of manipulating the electoral college count. That's important to address, but as many others have said, its just one facet of a much bigger problem, which the #FreedomToVoteAct confronts head on.
One of the biggest threats is that partisans will directly take control of the machinery of election administration and then use their power to manipulate vote counting--for example by trying to throw out some or all mail ballots.

Our action partner, @BlackVotersMtr, has boycotted Biden’s speech in #Georgia on the #VotingRights bills, refusing to act as a photo op prop. Understand the frustration: we’ve been screaming about Georgia as #JimCrow central for 8 years...
Laws alone won’t help: we need the Justice Department to stomp on the new "voter fraud vigilante" challenge system we uncovered. We need enforcement of the laws we have, Joe. gregpalast.com/georgias-origi…
And CNN and MSNBC should stop referring to #Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger as a "hero" just because he wouldn’t go to jail for Trump.

My statement: I thank @POTUS and @VP for returning to Georgia to continue their steadfast advocacy for passage of federal legislation to protect the freedom to vote. They made clear again today that they are committed to restoring the Senate to safeguard our democracy. #gapol🧵
Anyone working to invest in Georgia - our jobs, health, infrastructure, technology and votes - should come speak about the good work they are doing. That is what the President and VP did today, and I look forward to continuing to work with them to make progress for Georgians.
While I was not able to attend today’s event, the President and I connected by phone this morning. We reaffirmed our shared commitment to the American project of freedom and democracy, as he did in his remarks today here in Georgia.

The #midterms are too close for me to stay quiet about an idea I’ve been hinting at since early last year.

I’ve been conferring with some smart people who are helping me scope out a way we 1/26
might convince seasoned political influencers and organizers that well-mobilized #consumerPower holds the key to how we can push-back hard against a #RepublicanCoup we all know is in progress.

Only the uninformed are unaware of the mostly Republican-led 2/26
#AntiDemocrats who are busy building beachheads across the country, preparing to wage war against our elections, laws, politics, and values. They are doing this in plain view of the world. And without a serious plan to disrupt them, they are likely to succeed.

I’m not rushing to Jan. 6th without first acknowledging the significance of Jan. 5th. The determination, organizing & resilience of Black voters in Georgia resulted in the election of the first Black Senator since Reconstruction & the first Jewish statewide elected official ever.
When we ignore the significance of Jan. 5th we diminish our own power. Orgs like @BlackVotersMtr & @fairfightaction, @NAACP_LDF , @morethanavote, @LawyersComm & so many others fought in 2020 to ensure that Black voters could overcome obstacles to voting.
And credit to millions of Black Georgia voters who responded to efforts to suppress their vote with even greater determination. Waiting in line up to 9 hours to vote in the primary in Fulton County & showing up in historic numbers for the general. politico.com/news/2020/10/2…

The 14th Amendment, the 15th Amendment, the Enforcement Acts, the Klu Klux Klan Act, and the Civil Rights Act of 1875 all passed without a single Democratic vote. Sometimes doing the right thing is more important than being bipartisan.
Does anyone really think we shouldn't have given former slaves full citizenship and the right to vote, and protected them from being terrorized in the south because it wasn't bipartisan?
Sometimes doing what's right is more important than being bipartisan. It takes casting a hard, and yes, sometimes partisan vote. Well this is one of those times. We can't allow those openly hostile to democracy dicate the terms of it's reform.

Hello @SenatorSinema, I am your constituent and have tweeted &emailed you a lot. Never once have you answered my concerns. We have massive issues in this country, but not one thing is of any consequence unless we pass voting rights. Enough with the “no one tells me what to do”.⬇️
We need you to stand up for Americans and for your hero John Lewis. Passing voting rights is THE most partisan thing you could do. Carve the filibuster as you did to raise the debt ceiling and as the Rs did to rush judges through. We want our votes to count. Please set aside ⬇️

Today, @SenateGOP again undermined the sacred right to vote and harmed their own constituents when they blocked the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct.

While Republicans greenlight this assault on the ballot for their own political gain, Democrats are fighting back.
Right now, our nation faces the most sinister and severe campaign of voter suppression since Jim Crow. Across the country, GOP state legislators and GOP-appointed judges are silencing the voices of voters.
The House-passed Voting Rights Advancement Act empowers @TheJusticeDept to block voting restrictions imposed by states with dark histories of discrimination & ensure voters have fair access to the ballot – a cause to which our beloved John Lewis devoted his entire life.

🇺🇸The #FreedomToVoteAct, along with the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct contain the most comprehensive democracy reform laws enacted in decades.

The #FTVA will protect our elections from sabotage, dark money, gerrymandering and voter suppression. Get the facts:
brennancenter.org/sites/default/…
2. What would the #FreedomToVoteAct do?

EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES TO VOTE

The #FTVA creates a baseline national standard for voting access, preempting many of the onerous, racist restrictions passed by Republicans to prevent POC, people in lower income and/or Dem areas from voting.
3. What would the #FreedomToVoteAct do?

• Require all 50 states to offer Early Voting for at least 2 weeks prior to Election Day and include night and weekend hours.

• Require EV locations be easily accessible to all voters, esp. voters in rural areas and on college campuses.

On the morning of May 30, 2021, the last day to pass bills in the TX House in the 87th Legislative Session, House Dems faced near certain defeat against our voters & democracy w/the passage of SB 7.

My colleague @TMFtx pulled me aside & said: “I know the play to break quorum.”1
On that bill deadline day @TMFtx continued: “We break quorum, fly to Washington & tell Congress to pass the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct.”

Always game for #GoodTrouble, I said: “Yeah, let’s do THAT!” 2/
Later that day a coalition of Black & Brown TX House Members convened & decided to kill the voter suppression bill. We heard a powerful story from @Senfronia4Texas about her lifetime struggle for voting rights. @RepDeshotel counted members willing to leave. We had the #s! 3/

"Race-blind" redistricting is neither legal nor moral (and no one who draws maps is unaware of the racial implications). What the #NCGA is proposing would have never passed muster under Section 5. We need the John Lewis Act and we need it yesterday! @civilrightsorg @scsj #ncpol
But anyone who says they can/will comply with Section 2 of the VRA without looking at current racial data (dropped from @uscensusbureau today) will be looking at a hefty court bill. NC and every other state must comply with the VRA. You don't get to omit that from criteria.
Once again, NC is the poster child for the need for vigorous federal voting rights protections. Until Congress gets its act together, @scsj will hold the line for racial equity in redistricting. #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct #ForThePeopleAct

I’d like to ask @SenatorSinema why her Senate office is not in a federal building but in a private building where trespass laws can be used against people trying to meet with her. @Sen_JoeManchin has pulled the same trick.
Years back I was in #Arizona reporting on the GOP Secretary of State removing more than 100,000 Hispanics from the voter rolls. It was only through the efforts of @RevJJackson, @BarbaraArnwine and our friends at @SuVotoEsSuVoz that thousands of those removed were re-registered.

Throughout our history, Americans have celebrated #July4th as an annual recognition of our independence from tyranny, fight for freedom, and eventual establishment of our democracy. This year, we commemorate with an asterisk, a reminder of the perils our republic faces today.
The democracy that built this nation is under attack in a way that no American has ever witnessed in our lifetimes. We must act now to protect the institutions that make the United States the shining citadel and bulwark of democracy and freedom worldwide.
I am hopeful that the Senate will find a way to move forward the #ForThePeople Act and #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct both of which will help restore the right to vote across our nation and live up to Lyndon Johnson’s words by ensuring voting as a ‘basic right’ for all Americans.
