Incredibly moving #JuneteenthDay piece @thenation by @JessedHagopian about a recent pilgrimage with his father and brother to the Lenoir Plantation in Morgantown, Miss where their ancestors were enslaved... and what they found. thenation.com/article/societ…
As a magazine founded by abolitionists in 1865, honored that Jesse Hagopian would have @thenation publish this amazing act of remembrance. thenation.com/article/societ…
There is a Go Fund Me aimed at helping them turn this story into a doc if you are feeling generous. Hope you are on this Juneteenth. A story that demands telling in the face of a deeply reactionary erasure.

It's fitting that today marks both #JuneteenthDay and #FathersDay.

Maybe we should talk a bit about that intersection.

How many enslaved fathers were there that couldn't be with their children? How many families did that forever impact? #NC08

How many black fathers now are impacted by American governance? The name George Floyd comes to mind. #nc08

Some things we learned in our journey of getting to know #HarrietTubman for this unique take on her personality, some of which you may know yourself/ (#minty is available on Youtube and Vimeo )
1)She was always considered a very independent girl/slave
2)she had incredibly adult responsibilities as a child bc she was trusted and a self-starter, two qualities that would eventually lead her and many others to freedom
3)She was hit in the head w a brick thrown by a slave owner when she tried to intervene in a punishment
4)she developed narcolepsy but swore to her dying day it wasn't narcolepsy but a gift from God. She claimed God showed her visions in her "fugues", some that helped her out of some very risky close calls. She credits those visions with her successes.

I’m here at Williams Park with @kathrynvarn and @LuisSantana for the #JuneteenthDay celebration. St. Pete protest leader Terron Gland is speaking to a couple hundred people. Soon, there will be a march through downtown. Follow us for coverage through the night @TB_Times Image
He’s telling people to take advantage of free masks. “No justice. No peace.” ... “Is there anybody here not fighting for justice? ... y’all should be blowing the leaves off these trees right now.” @TB_Times
The crowd is singing happy birthday to this man. “We love you, we do,” Terron sings. His own birthday is Monday, he says. @TB_Times Image

Had the remainder of protester charges not been withdrawn yesterday, our ad hoc team of attorneys would be in court today, on a #JuneteenthDay that feels especially monumental this year.
Instead, we can use today to celebrate the progress that has been achieved for our Black neighbors while educating ourselves and demanding change, especially related to police brutality and misconduct.
We also need to examine *and fix* the vast racial inequities in our "justice" system that fails to keep us save, but especially fails our communities of color (specifically Black communities).

This #Juneteenth, we want to take a moment to honor a few influential black PC, tech and gaming pioneers who have touched our lives in ways we never knew...

#TechHistory #JUNETEENTH2020
First up, Jerry Lawson.

He pioneered the video game cartridge for the Fairchild Channel F system, the first gaming console that utilized interchangeable cartridges back in the 70s. It never saw the popularity like the Atari VCS or the NES but, its influence is undeniable. ImageImage
Following Jerry Lawson's work, Ed Smith co-designed an early cartridge-based video game system, the APF MP-1000 (1978) for APF Electronics.

He also worked on its computer attachment, the Imagination Machine, which competed with products from Apple and Atari in the late 1970s. Image

Today is Juneteenth, emancipation day. Happy Jubilee Day to everyone! Happy Emancipation Day.

On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas with the news slavery has ended and the slaves were free.

#JuneteenthDay
We celebrate this day as a community because it sparked one of the biggest changes to the lives of ALL Americans. Finally, black people across the Country were free. Though the changes were not immediate, and we still fight for equal rights, it was the first true beginning.
It led us to the right to vote, the right to a full education, and the right to marry who we love.

Today, we celebrate. This is a day of reflection, education and solidarity. We educate our children and show them why we have hope. Hope for unity.

1/x On this Juneteeth day, I want to step back a moment and talk briefly about, not the day itself, but how close we came to that day never coming to pass when it did. #HappyJuneteenth #JUNETEENTH2020
2/x From 1850 to 1861, there were about 150 proposals for a 13th Amendment that would have made it unconstitutional to abolish slavery. In other words, while the post-war 13th Amendment abolished slavery, the pre-war versions would have done the opposite.
3/x That 150 number is not a typo. Those in favor of slavery tried really, really, really hard to write it more explicitly into the Constitution. The fact that they didn’t succeed was not for a lack of trying and they almost succeeded.

When @RealDonaldTrump announced he would be holding a campaign rally on June 19 in #Tulsa, #Oklahoma, there was immediate backlash. #Juneteenth nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
Not only had the president chosen #Juneteenth - a day celebrating freedom and recognizing the resilience of enslaved people - but he also chose the city where a mob of white supremacists terrorized and killed Black people, destroying #BlackWallStreet in the 1921 #TulsaMassacre.
As our nation grapples with recent police killings of Black people and calls to address systemic racism and white supremacy culture in our society, @RealDonaldTrump was criticized for co-opting historically significant spaces for Black people for himself.

Today, we celebrate the liberation of Black people in America. For those who don’t know the history, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that the last formerly enslaved people found out they were free. Learn more here: s.si.edu/2YNBo24
In this critical moment in our country, it is important to remember that freedom was not granted by any one person. It was a hard-fought battle, won through uprisings, revolts, and many sacrifices.
The fight for freedom wasn’t over and done with in 1865 -- freedom and justice for all is still being fought in the streets today.

Haven't heard about #JuneteenthDay until this year? You are not alone, and that's a problem.

What is taught in school shapes our worldview. What is NOT taught in school can negate the history, culture and value of our own neighbors.

(thread)

nbcnews.to/2YSXCj9
What has not been taught in school is part of erasing the history of systemic racism and the contributions of Black people and other minority groups.

#JuneteenthDay isn't the only thing you didn't learn about: Tulsa Massacre, the Zoot Suit Riots, Japanese internment?

👇🏿
“There’s a long legacy of institutional racism that is barely covered in the mainstream corporate curriculum. It’s really astounding how little the contributions of Black people are included in much of the mainstream curriculum." -@JessedHagopian

This Friday is #JUNETEENTH2020

(learn more here: juneteenth.com/history.htm)

Some people like to say that 246 years of slavery wasn’t that long, so last year I gave a talk that put the history of slavery into an astronomical context

Here’s that talk

1/n
Quick aside to remind you that slavery wasn’t over just because Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation

Slaveowners resisted. And lied

There were enslaved Black people who weren’t told of their freedom until well into the 1960s

google.com/amp/s/www.vice…

#Juneteenth

2/n
I started the talk with a brief history of the universe and the US

Look at how tiny that green slice of “freedom” is

Don’t you dare tell me that’s it’s been long enough for Black people to be “over” slavery

Today is #Juneteenth, a solemn reminder of where we've been in this nation and what we've fought for. Today serves as a celebration for all that we have accomplished.

Today reminds us that never again will we be in chains. Never again will we be silenced. Never again will we be ignored.
(2/4) Image
Today, we celebrate. We think on the sacrifices of our ancestors. We take a look at where we are because of those sacrifices. And we look towards our children, who will enjoy the most freedoms.
