Yesterday my cane tapped a pram blocking the tactile pavement at a pedestrian crossing.

Two people shouted at me & one tried to grab my cane out of my hand.

I pulled back & shouted “don’t grab me! Just move!”

Never ever touch a white cane, it’s my eyes! #JustAskDontGrab
The same exactly thing happened this morning, walking along the platform, & my white cane caught someone’s feet.

Their first reaction?

To grab my cane holding arm & yank it hard. Again I shouted “DON’T grab me!”

Why do people do this?! Why do they grab the thing that helps!
It’s simple, don’t touch disabled people’s mobility aids.

You don’t know what you’re doing. It’s specialist equipment, used with experience & training.

It is basically NEVER helpful to grab a white cane, wheelchair or service animal.

It will hurt someone or break something.

I’m visually impaired & use a white cane.

I was sat on the tube putting my backpack on. Suddenly a man grabbed my bag & shoulder.

I shouted “woah! what are you doing?” I thought he was stealing my bag.

He then verbally abused me for 5 mins because he wanted to “help me”.
1/
Me: what are you doing?! Get off.
Him: I’m helping you!
Me: don’t touch me.
Him: I saw your stick I’m helping you with your bag.
Me: I thought you were stealing it! How was I to know!
Him: this train is packed with 100 people I wanted to help you!
Me: why didn’t you ask!
2/
Him: I was just going to help you! (His tone got increasingly aggressive by this point)
Me: then ASK ME IF I NEED HELP!
Him: this train is packed! I was going to help you.
Me: I do this every day. Don’t touch people or their possessions without ASKING!

He started muttering.

I've seen the #BirdBoxChallenge all over social media lately. As someone with low vision and a blindness cane user, it worries me to see many unsafe and inaccurate videos about doing tasks with no vision. Here is a thread on safe and positive alternatives to the viral challenge
I'm not actually offended by the Bird Box Challenge itself. I like the idea of people learning about life without sight. What I don't like is that many of the activities can easily lead to injury or perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Now, let's get started with our alternatives!
1. Use a screen reader to navigate technology

How would you use your smart devices without eyes? Try enabling a screen reader to find out. iOS users can turn on VoiceOver and Android can use TalkBack.

For Windows, press ctrl-windows-n and for Mac press command-F5

CW Disability Hate Crime / Threat of violence

At a pedestrian crossing.
Me: can I get to the box please?
Man: there’s a road.
Me: (sarcastically)Yes I know there’s a road.
The signal sounded so I started to cross.
Man: Next time I’ll push you in front of a fucking car.

1/?
On the other side of the road.
Me: Sorry what did you say?

I then had to listen to a 5 minute tirade from this man. He blocked my path & wasn't going to let me leave until he'd finished lecturing me. He lectured me about how ungrateful I was & how he was only trying to help. 2/?
He berated me because he was being kind, he wanted to make sure I was safe. When I explained that I knew there was a road, there is tactile paving, I was asking for access to the box so that I could cross safely, he just shouted at me for not being "polite". 3/?
