Ahmaud Arbery was chased down and murdered on a country road by three white men in a pickup truck. Will the perpetrators of this modern-day lynching go free?

Could we be staring down the barrel of a Jim Crow jury in 2021? Here are the facts.

#JusticeForAhmaudArbery
Arbery was murdered in Glynn County, which is 27% Black. 11 Black jurors were part of the original pool of 65 juror, and only 1 Black juror ended up on the trial.

Is this a jury of peers?
Retired law enforcement officer on jury:
- Trained in the military and worked in law enforcement for 50 years
- Personally knows the police chief
- Met the defense attorney through his connections in the Republican Party.
- Is a proponent of citizen's arrests.

Several action-oriented lists are circulating right now but all emphasize two points: White people and NB-POC need to (1) dismantle Anti-Blackness and (2) relieve Black people from the burden of educating us about HOW (not if) we reinforce systems of oppression. Some links below:

What's clear is that we need an overhaul of our justice system. We NEED accountability. There's justice that hasn't been served for the Black lives lost at the hands of the police.

Today I messaged my sister who lives in Chile for help. As many of you are probably aware riots broke out all over the country in protest of the government in October of 2019. Now as riots break out all over here I wanted to share some of the tips she gave me --
1/?
-- from the time she participated in these riots herself.

1) Many people lost an eye due to rubber bullets, so she recommends that if you go out, that you wear goggles if you can to protect your eyes.
2/?
2) If at any point you see that they are about to shoot something listen to how the sound of the gun echoes, and stay low. When they shoot rubber bullets they have a louder sound and a bigger echo. In their riots, shotguns that can shoot gas were used and those echo less.

For years, with every horrific murder of an innocent black man, woman, or child, I have always tried to find the right words to express my condolences and outrage
But the privilege I am afforded by the color of my skin has often left me feeling like this is not a fight that I can truly take on as my own. Not today, not anymore. Like so many of you, I am angry. I am more than angry. I am infuriated and I am disgusted.
I am exhausted by the heartbreak I feel seeing mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and children suffering because their loved one was murdered or locked away unjustly for being black.

This week has been painful. The trauma of black people is all over the internet right now so instead of feeling helpless I want to share a thread of what everyone can do to help.

1. Don't ignore racism. To do so is to be complicit.
3. Donate to campaigns like
@MNFreedomFund to support those who have been jailed for protesting.

Protestors against black murders are thrown tear gas and protestors against lockdowns are allowed to carry guns and scream in the face of police hmmm 🧐

We are taking action to demand that the lives of the people, particularly Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people who are being hit hardest by the pandemic, are put before the pockets of corporations. Image
We are fighting for an end to racist violence, and for the rights of workers, many of whom are Black, Latinx, and Indigenous, not to be forced back to work with covid-19 still ravaging their communities. Image

1/Brian Williams conducted a profound interview w/Bryan Stevenson of The Equal Justice Initiative on #The11thHour about murder of #AhmaudArbery. Here’s a few of Stevenson’s insightful quotes: “There’s a presumption of dangerousness&guilt that’s assigned to black&brown people.”
2/Bryan Stevenson: “It’s almost as if the burden is on a person of color to prove that their victimization is legitimate...that they don’t deserve what they got...that they haven’t done something wrong.” #JusticeForAhmaudArbery
3/Bryan Stevenson:”To justify the brutal abuse&mistreatment (of slavery), we created the myth that blk ppl are dangerous, that they’re presumptively guilty. We ended chattel slavery, but we didnt end that narrative. We went from calling blk ppl slaves to calling blk ppl criminals.”
