I’ve had some questions about my profile pic. I keep it up because it’s a case that doesn’t get nearly enough attention - that of Christopher Allen, a dual US/UK national & young freelance journalist who was killed reporting on the civil conflict in South Sudan on 26 August 2017.
Chris was one of 10 journalists killed with impunity during the civil conflict that broke out in December 2013. A unity government was finally formed and the conflict is considered to have ended this past February - but still nothing has been done to address the lasting impunity.
But responsibility does not stop with the South Sudanese. Chris’ own governments - the US and UK - have done shamefully little in more than 3 years. The UN system has also failed. And because Chris was a freelancer, there was no big media outlet to step in and help his family.
At @RSF_inter, we work every day to ensure the protection of journalists & to #endimpunity for the alarming number of journalists killed (968 over past 10 years). On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, my thoughts are on some specific cases - thread.
@RSF_inter Azerbaijani editor Elmar Huseynov was the first case of a murdered journalist I ever worked on, and will always stay with me. He was gunned down in a contract-style killing outside his Baku flat on 2 March 2005. More than 14 years on, there's still been no justice. #endimpunity 
@RSF_inter Elmar Huseynov's murder inspired a new generation of journalists & civil society activists in #Azerbaijan, including Rasim Aliyev - who was himself killed in murky circumstances following the Baku European Games in Aug 2015. I will always remember his quiet heroism. #endimpunity

Christopher Allen was a dual US-UK citizen, but both governments have done shamefully little to assist his family or press for an investigation. His case has received bare minimal consular support and no recognition of the gravity of a journalist being killed in the line of duty.
Every person who joins us on Monday - either in London or at the parallel vigil in DC - really will make a difference to the fight for #JusticeforChris. Please do come along, and help share Chris’ story.
