One year ago today, an Israeli soldier shot Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the head, killing her while she was reporting in a clearly marked press vest and helmet.

Here’s what’s happened since. Image
Shireen dedicated her life to exposing Israel’s brutal oppression of Palestinians.

Known to many as “the voice of Palestine,” she was a household name beloved by millions across the Arab world.
After Israel killed Shireen, Israeli police attacked pallbearers at her funeral while millions around the world watched in horror.

Even in death, Shireen inspired unity among Palestinians and repression from Israel.

Next week on May 11, it will be 1 year since an Israeli soldier killed my beloved aunt, the trailblazing Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Here’s what happened over the last year since she was killed. 🧵
Day 0: On May 11, Shireen is reporting while wearing a clearly marked press vest and helmet when an Israeli soldier shoots and kills her.

Day 2: At Shireen’s funeral, Israeli police assault mourners, including her pallbearers, causing her casket to fall.
Day 4: The US offers its “deep condolences” without taking any steps to hold Israel accountable, even though Shireen was a US citizen.

Day 30: A month after killing Shireen, Israel has faced zero accountability.

ICYMI: This morning CODEPINK's @medeabenjamin and Tighe Barry told @SecBlinken to #FreeAssange and seek #JusticeForShireen at a #WorldPressFreedomDay event where he mentioned neither of them.
Assange has been in prison for years in London while fighting extradition to the United States.

His "crime"? Publishing the truth about US operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gitmo, and all around the world.

Lemme tell you how the Israeli-Palestinian narrative is shaped online;
The Israeli propaganda & disinformation stay online (under-enforced) while the Palestinian documentation of human rights violations is censored and taken down (over-enforced). check this thread for details 👇🏽
Yesterday's investigation results regarding Shireen's killing weren't surprising. but I wanted to remind you all, that we escalated this video twice to FB. Where the Israeli spokesperson is spreading propaganda & disinformation & FB didn't label it or take it down.
This is another screenshot of the Israeli prime minister on Twitter spreading disinformation, that she wasn't killed by Israeli authorities. It stayed online, without being deleted or even labeling it as disinformation.

❗️🇮🇱's military probe admits it is "highly probable" that an Israeli soldier shot to death journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, but won't take action against them. 🇨🇦 must demand an independent investigation to hold these murderers accountable! @melaniejoly @CanEmbIsrael @CanadaRepPA Haaretz article: title: Israeli Military Admits 'Highly Prob
@melaniejoly @CanEmbIsrael @CanadaRepPA Unfortunately, Israel's probe spreads misinformation by suggesting that Shireen may have been shot by 'accident', despite multiple independent probes which found no evidence of Palestinian militants in the area and said that the journalists were deliberately targeted by Israel.
@melaniejoly @CanEmbIsrael @CanadaRepPA From the start, multiple eyewitnesses, including several journalists, have insisted that Israeli forces were responsible for the attack, and that Abu Akleh had been deliberately targeted by Israel. These claims have been corroborated by multiple independent analyses.

THREAD: After finally meeting with the Abu Akleh family today, @SecBlinken has yet to commit to holding a US investigation into the Israeli murder of their family member, Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
The family has been pushing for the US to hold Israel accountable for killing Shireen for over two months. The Abu Akleh family has been clear that a transparent and thorough US investigation is the very first step towards accountability and justice for Shireen.
Though they met with @SecBlinken today, the Abu Akleh family is still waiting for meaningful action from the US and continuing to demand a meeting with @POTUS to ensure that achieving justice for Shireen is a priority.

As Palestinians, we call for meaningful solidarity, we demand accountability.

Journalist syndicates & media studies/journalism faculties must take concrete action to hold apartheid Israel accountable for the murder of #ShireenAbuAkleh. #JusticeForShireen

Journalist syndicates, unions and federations should:

- End ties with complicit Israeli institutions.

- Pledge to refuse junkets to Israel funded by the Israeli government, complicit Israeli institutions and Israel lobby groups.
- Support journalists who refuse to cover assignments in Israel on ethical grounds.

- Support the International Federation of Journalists @IFJGlobal's case before the @IntlCrimCourt on Israel’s systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists.

Absolutely heartbreaking news. Veteran Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh has passed away after being in shot in the head by Israeli forces while reporting on an Israeli army raid on a refugee camp in Jenin, occupied West Bank. She was wearing a press vest at the time.
Whilst many ignore the plight of the Palestinians, Shireen spent decades courageously highlighting the Palestinian struggle. Since 2000 up until now, Israel has killed about 50 Palestinian journalists who were working in the field.
You will hear a lot about 'clashes' in the next 24 hours. This is a deliberate misrepresentation of the current situation in Palestine. This was a deliberate killing and not the first either.
