Happy Thanksgiving week!

My new Against the Grain column: “The Biggest Political Turkeys of 2020”

“The most infamous political flops of the year—from not-ready-for-prime-time candidates to campaign tactics that didn’t stand the test of time.”

1) Martha McSally, who “was one of the few frontline Republican Senate candidates to run behind President Trump; the president lost the state by a 0.3-percent margin, while she trailed Kelly by 2.4 percent.”

2) Amy McGrath, the #KYSEN challenger who raised $88M in her race against McConnell only to see him win the second-highest vote share in his Senate career

It's time for the #KYSen debate between @AmyMcGrathKY and @LeaderMcConnell. Follow along, friends, and I'll give you the highlights. It's go time! 1/
McGrath: Hits McConnell right away for knowing about #COVID19 as early as January but not warning Kentuckians about the threat. 2/
McConnell: starts by congratulating McGrath on her military service.

Now we'll wait for McGrath to mention how she wrote to McConnell as a kid about how she wanted to be a fighter pilot and he never responded. It won't take long, I'm sure. 3/

A modest proposal regarding allocating your donations.

Walk away from Kentucky.

It's unwinnable.

Do I need to do a thread?
Ok. A thread. I kept @ClimateHawkVote out of #KYSen because, well, lots of reasons but foremost was that the general election would be unwinnable.
The way to #DitchMitch2020 is to diminish his power. Make him a minority leader. That means donate to Dems in AZ, CO, GA (both), IA, ME, NC, and even SC and TX. All of these are more winnable than KY.

Today, @Booker4KY made the #KYSen primary closer than anyone thought it could be, inspiring thousands of Kentuckians with his message of justice and structural change. We always knew this race would be an uphill battle.
For over a year, Amy McGrath has enjoyed institutional support from the national party and the DSCC, raising a staggering $41 million. It’s been a decade since a DSCC-endorsed candidate lost a primary.
While this wasn’t the outcome we hoped for, we are so grateful for @Booker4KY showing the power of a multi-racial, grassroots movement. We’re dedicated to rallying behind the winner and sending Mitch McConnell packing, and hope you’ll all join us: paybackproject.org

Ok, I've finally seen enough: Amy McGrath (D) has defeated Charles Booker (D) in the #KYSEN primary.
One thing we'll never know: what the outcome would have been if McGrath (D) hadn't banked such a large lead in absentee ballots. #KYSEN
In the end, this will be a pretty unimpressive primary margin for a $41 million candidate who started w/ a huge name ID advantage.

McGrath might be living proof there's an inflection point at which massive sums of out-of-state $$ become more harmful than helpful. #KY06 #KYSEN

Just talked to spox for the Jefferson County Clerk, with easily the most Democratic voters in the state and the biggest factor in #kysen results. A few things:
Based on past statements from county/state election officials, we expected Jefferson County results to come Tuesday after 6pm, but they will come earlier. Spox says these likely will be sent to state that morning & then posted publicly -- including all early and mail-ins. #kysen
JeffCo spox also said they don't have a final figure for how many absentee ballots were mailed in, but should have that number soon. Said there were ~100 in a bin to go over whether signature was correct, plus waiting on a few counties to FedEx ballots sent to wrong address.

Here in the Expo Center in Louisville. A whole lot of space and short lines to vote.
The Fayette County Clerk appears to have not planned this out the same way.

MONDAY NIGHT KY ELECTION THREAD:

'Twas the night before voting
And all through the Commonwealth
Election officials were stirring
To secure democracy's health

Here's what I'll be watching tomorrow. A thread:
1. Lines (duh). I'm expecting lines of 30-45 minutes, maybe an hour, but not many hours like in GA and WI. That's cause of the push for mail-in voting. So if lines are a lot longer, it means truly massive in-person turnout, or something seriously went wrong with check-in/machines
2. Check-in process. Louisville and Lexington both will have election officials with e-pollbooks to direct voters to correct line. I'm told it will take about 45 seconds per voter to check them in, with lots of stations. Will that be a bottleneck? Will it be slower?

For those wondering how voting will work at one (huge) voting place in Louisville Tuesday & how turnout may effect Dem #kysen primary, here’s some context from turnout numbers in recent years compared numbers from last week on mailed absentee ballots plus early voters (1/2)
Jefferson Co. voter turnout (total; Dems)

2016: 138,619; 110,269
2018: 104,924; 75,555
2019: 133,405; 98,515

Jefferson County, KY number of absentee ballots mailed to voters plus in person early voters

2020: 222,705; ???

(we don’t know how many will mail ballots back)(2/2)
For a little more context, here’s Jefferson County’s biggest turnout in many years, the 2008 (Barack Obama) primary:

192,630 total
144,871 Democrats

NEW: @AmyMcGrathKY's campaign says its national TV ads have helped her raise millions in her #KYSen bid. (Setting aside the current primary) I explored whether the fundraising strategy could be replicated (Looking at you, #SCSen).

McGrath's national buying started out as an experiment, her campaign manager told me. They had the resources, so why not? Low risk, high-potential reward. The response? #KYsen morningconsult.com/2020/06/18/mcg… Image
.@Team_Mitch is an easy target for national Democratic activist energy -- his #KYSen rival in '14 raised a ton of money, too -- due in part to his large, and almost totally negative name ID from the national Dem base. @LindseyGrahamSC comes in second. morningconsult.com/2020/06/18/mcg… Image

NEW: @ProjectLincoln - known in Washington for its attacks on @realDonaldTrump - has turned its attention to Republican senators and is now taking aim at @Team_Mitch with a new minute-long spot airing in Kentucky. morningconsult.com/2020/05/28/lin…
Unlike its other spots, the @ProjectLincoln #KYSen ad doesn't try to tie McConnell to the president. It dubs him "rich Mitch," and contrasts his personal financial standing with the commonwealth's.

The ad:
