This #kabulairlift mission was a limited success.
Well done @dfat, @IRLDeptDefence and @defenceforces. Lives have been saved.

But, how many more could have been saved if we got there earlier.
This is about risk, about relationships (national and international) + rivalry.

A 🧵👇
Lack of knowledge about what @defenceforces can do - even in this #shitshow - lead to risk aversion last week.
Well known rivalry between @defenceforces and @IRLDeptDefence lead to a slow Policy response, putting forward options.
And a lack of professional relationships between @dfat and @defenceforces at working/desk level slowed it down too, because interdepartmental stuff is jealously guarded by @IRLDeptDefence.

And then there's the issue of #airlift that @BerryCathal and others have highlighted.

It’s boggles my mind as to how they can possibly just now be this concerned. We’ve been warning them over and over again for seven months. Daily.
Next to completely abandoning them, this is our nightmare scenario.

Also, if you wonder why I come & go while reporting, I care for my disabled son after school finishes on week days so had to pop away to attend to him.

Many more Afghans at risk evacuated to Germany.

While the area around the perimeter of Kabul Airport is hectic and dangerous, inside the secure zone on tnd military side is much more calm.

It’s going to be a busy night in Kabul. Radar is showing a Qatar Air Force C-17 about to land, another 3 USAF C-17s in route with an RAF C-130 in line with them, and another USAF AC-130 bringing up the rear. Don’t tell me we’re not doing everything possible to get folks out.

In 2005, I wrote a piece in a now defunct publication, arguing that those who believed that the invasion & occupation of #Iraq & #Afghanistan had been ‘an disaster’ were misunderstanding the thinking of those who took us to war

For them it was a success.
