Kafkaesque is a term to describe unnecessarily complicated and frustrating experiences, like being forced to navigate labyrinths of bureaucracy. But does standing in a long line to fill out confusing paperwork really capture the richness of Kafka's vision?

Beyond the word's casual use, what makes something Kafkaesque? Franz Kafka's stories do indeed deal with many mundane and absurd aspects of modern bureaucracy, drawn in part from his experience of working as an insurance clerk in early 20th century Prague.

1. Is there something deeply dysfunctional going on with @thameswater / @LanesForDrains? I'm having the most Kafkaesque time trying to get them to deal with waste overflow in my garden...it's been more than a month now! #Thameswater #nightmare
2. It’s not as if I can change suppliers or something. All the promises that have been broken, the lack of a clear diagnosis, and the chasing I’ve had to do does take a toll when you’ve other challenges to deal with
3. Maybe @Ofwat or @CCWvoice should be exploring whether @thameswater is fit for purpose because even their(mainly v. helpful and courteous) front-line staff have hinted their frustration about the way my case - and others are handled…or not handled!

Day 2 of the #JonesvDeSantis trial done. What have we learned so far? A lot! Mostly we've learned that the State of Florida is wedded to defending a system of poll taxes that they don't even know how to implement.
We started with the inspiring testimony of Plaintiff Moreland. Ms. Moreland and people like her are why we are fighting this fight. After #Amendment4 passed, she registered to vote. But later in 2019, she found out she still owes $$ from a yrs old conviction.
Under this new law, these fines and fees would stand in the way of her ability to vote. #polltax And even though @GovRonDeSantis lost in every court so far on this law, she was removed from the rolls earlier this year. While she has been reinstated, so many others are at risk.

#BREAKING: A federal court has thrown out criminal convictions of four volunteers who left food and water in the desert for migrants at risk of death. The court said prosecuting them violated #RFRA--a major victory for #ReligiousFreedom! 1/ s3.amazonaws.com/becketnewsite/…
Fueled by faith, these volunteers traveled to the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, where migrant deaths are common, placing food & water along foot trails to prevent future deaths. 32 sets of human remains were recovered from this area in 2017 alone. 2/ credit: Google
Proving no good deed goes unpunished, the government criminally prosecuted the volunteers for entering the refuge & “abandoning property” (i.e., food & water) without a permit (even though no permit would allow them to leave food or water for migrants anyways). #Kafkaesque 3/

@ThomasS4217 1/ This <thread> provides a timeline for what appears to be a coordinated effort by the current WH to expand pool of children available for transnational adoptions, which began at the State dept.'s Consular Affairs office on Jan 27, 2017, and by DHS on Feb 2, 2017
#ZeroTolerance
@ThomasS4217 2/ Fueled by evangelical fervor for transnational adoptions (receipts downthread: indebted to @rkfatherlee), current WH Adm.'s goal is to remove detained minors from federal jurisdiction (HHS/ACF/ORR/UAC) as quickly as possible by transferring detained children to 1 of 17 states
@ThomasS4217 3/ Once detained children enter a state's foster care system, they are no longer the responsibility of the federal gov't (HHS/ACF/ORR/UAC), but instead those children's welfare is the responsibility of that particular state.
