As Dorian is being is tracked I thought it would be a good time to reshare @njstandupspeak "Long Road Home" along with the very personal side of severe weather and climate chaos. It's my own personal story. 1/

I'm a Jersey girl. There is no doubt about that. I'm half Portuguese but grew up in South Jersey but that's another thread. My mother is a Rhody. I spent my summers in Ocean Citu, NJ and in Narragansett, RI. My grandmother's house sat on Narrow River. 2/
I had a relationship with water- salt or fresh. But salt water was always like a dear friend; healing my body & spirit, embracing me in the warmest of hugs, daring my sense of adventure. I was always *home* of I was on the sand. My uncles taught us to fish. My grandmother 3/

It wasn’t an Act of God. It was an Act of Chevron. An Act of Exxon. An Act of Big Oil. gregpalast.com/new-orleans-wi… #NewOrleans #Louisiana #HurricaneKatrina #Barry #BigOil #Pollution #Environment #ClimateChange
Take a look at these numbers dug out of #Louisiana state records:

Conoco 3.3 million acres
Exxon Mobil 2.1 million acres
Chevron 2.7 million acres
Shell 1.3 million acres

These are the total acres of wetlands removed by just four oil companies over two decades.
#NewOrleans used be to a long, swampy way from the Gulf of Mexico. #Hurricanes & storm surges had to cross a protective mangrove forest nearly a 100 miles thick. Then Standard Oil, Exxon’s prior alias, began channeling pipelines & tanker routes thu the soft delta prairie grass.

In 2005 I explained exactly how #NewOrleans drowned and would drown again, maybe in the next few days... gregpalast.com/new-orleans-wi… #Louisiana #HurricaneKatrina #Barry #BigOil
I hope you don’t think #Trump and his army corps of engineers gives a damn about a black city sinking. #Katrina turned #Louisiana from blue to red, a form of voter purging that includes murder in its method. gregpalast.com/new-orleans-wi… #Barry
But DON’T blame the Lady. #Katrina killed no one. In fact, she missed the city of #NewOrleans completely, going wide to the east. It wasn’t Mother Nature that drowned, suffocated, de-hydrated and starved nearly 2,000 people in 2005. This is the real story. gregpalast.com/how-mother-nat…

(1) The only time Democrats care about the US citizens of Puerto Rico is when they can make political hay out of them.

At all other times they ignore the territory & it's extreme poverty, economic dependency, & rampant political corruption.

Hurricane Maria deaths estimate.
(2) Watching hurricanes #Katrina & #Harvey from afar was an experience that radicalized me to become a Hurricane Watcher, focusing on storms affecting the US. Harvey had the potential to be another Katrina. Thanks to sterling work at all levels, Katrina-level tragedy was averted.
(3) The fact is, #Harvey, #Irma, & #Maria were handled well by local, state/territory, & federal government. Far Left Democrats FEEL that Maria wasn't, but Far Left Democrats feel a lot of things, especially since the #TDS pandemic outbreak on 11/8/16.

Friendly reminder, in this time of evangelical Christianity dominating popular conceptions around what it means to follow Jesus —

The actual “end of days” that the Bible talks about is not about violence and mayhem, but peace with justice.

I have some receipts, fwiw.
Revelation, that Biblical book over which fundamentalist Christians love to (piously) orgasm, lays it out:

“See, the home of God is among mortals…death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more” (Rev. 21:3-4).
The prophet Isaiah sketches out a vision of a “peaceable kingdom” at the end of days:

“The wolf shall live with the lamb…” (Isa. 11:6)
