A group of masked men-the KKK, appeared at the front and rear doors of Bierfield's store. They forced him outside and shot Bierfield five times, four times in the head at point-blank range, and then left him for dead in the middle of the street. (cont)

he was thrown into a fire; the mob beat him with rails from a broken fence as he tried to escape twice. Also disturbing is that the mob collected pieces of his charred remains as souvenirs. The next day, townspeople posed for a photo where the lynching occured.
