The Kilauea in Hawaii is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and a popular tourist destination. But people should stay away from the volcano because it haunts ash and lava.
The eruption began yesterday evening inside the volcanic basin on the Big Island, said the US earthquake monitoring station USGS. Clouds of red steam rose into the night sky, as seen in images of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The USGS warned that a lot of volcanic ash could enter the atmosphere. Aircraft are said to fly around the area around Kilauea. The US weather service warned that the wind could carry the ashes to villages in the southwest of the island.

The Health Interventions in Volcanic Eruptions project has finished. It has been amazing and challenging in equal amounts!! I will be adding highlights to this thread over the coming days. Enjoy! #IVHHN Image
The consortium was made up of academic (@durham_uni, @GeofisicaUNAM, @univ_indonesia, Kagoshima Uni, @IOMworld) and stakeholder institutions (@PAHOemergencies, @pmi_diy @SaveChildren_ID) and funded by @Elrha/@wellcometrust/@DFID_UK. Image
The aim of the project was to determine the effectiveness of different kinds of respiratory protection worn by communities affected by eruptions, and to understand what cultural contexts influence people’s motivations to wear them. We worked in Indonesia, Mexico & Japan. Image

Lots of rumors going around about #Kilauea. Scared people make patterns to find safety, but we need to use science to tell us what patterns are real. This thread will have some basic facts about volcanoes. #ScienceForBetterDecisions.
1. Magna with more quartz is stickier, can grow into tall cone, traps gases & more likely to explode: Think Mt. St. Helens or Krakatoa. Low quartz magma, like Kilauea, create lava flows that travel out into a large, flatter shield volcano. Kilauea will not behave like St. Helens!
2. Volcanic explosions happen because gases are trapped and pressure builds up like a pressure cooker. These can be the gases produced by the volcano or steam from interacting with the ground water. At Kilauea, it is interaction with ground water that is causing the explosions.
