Finally. This @arstechnica report covers most of what Facebook press is missing and I still believe is one too many FB fails to properly disclose risk. It comes on the same week as this brutally candid and accurate takedown by @Trevornoah. You ok, @andymstone? This is what happens when you mislead consumers, advertisers and investors.
Here is some of the early data referenced by @samuelaxon. As he notes, we don’t know if Facebook is a bit better or worse than average. They’re misleading users claiming they may not be able to stay free so that could give them a point or two although no one prob believes them.

Wow 4% - nailed it.

2 things:
(1) user surveys aren’t often accurate but there are no legit incentives to say “yes” & this ⬇️ had 8,500 votes
(2) this kneecaps Facebook who has history of intentionally withholding info from investors.

I still say public is missing this.
Here is a great report by @larakiara, this is the kind of technical detail a topic like this needs. I still say press and public is missing the real story and the greatest single privacy flex and threat to Facebook’s business in history. A good thing.

More info in this thread. And to be clear, press overall did an outstanding job describing the rollout and avoiding Facebook’s narrative. I just think the market analysis, analysts and last few days are drunk on earnings (backward-looking).

5pm. Try to not listen to anything about revenues, profits and future FUD and see what else you hear.
Just having this convo. Of course, Facebook will present this as not a big deal. If the world knows data protection (something consumers want) is a risk to Facebook, then sharks will circle and regulatory and advocacy risk will heighten. #KneecapFacebook
So instead they’ll push creators, small business and normal formula for empowering the long tail. The CFO message above will serve as their “CYA” and they will go out of their way not to highlight the largest risk they’ve ever seen.
