My best tweets and threads about "Platform Engineering" from 2022 ♻️

With bonus thoughts and commentary 😁

🧵 👇
This was my original thread on Platform Engineering back in February that really kicked off (I think this is my most popular tweet, ever!) 🚀

In March, my team and I consolidated our learnings from the original thread (and other sources) into this article, "Is Platform Engineering the New DevOps or SRE?" 📚

#KubeCon EU Takeaway 2: ➡️ Platforms and “golden paths” enable productivity and reduce developer friction

I saw several great talks, and also presented on why I think golden paths and platform engineering are the next big thing 🔥

Let's explore this in more detail: 🧵 👇
The first mention of "golden paths" was from @MercedesBenz in the opening keynote, where they talked about the K8s-based platform they had built over the past 7 years 🏎️

Lots of thought, effort, and iteration had been applied to the dev experience 🧰

@MercedesBenz Golden paths are all about making it easy for a developer to code, ship, and run applications; to go from biz idea, to code, to test, to running in prod, to collecting telemetry to enable iteration ⚡

There can be one golden path or many, depending on your use cases 🛣️

My top five takeaways from #KubeCon:

1. Cloud education is vitally important
2. Platforms and “golden paths” enable productivity
3. Developer experience is top of mind
4. Cloud networking is simplifying
5. Increasing focus on security

Let's explore 1 in more detail 🧵 👇
First, the complete #KubeConEU summary blog post that provides in-depth coverage can be found here:

Takeaway 1 ➡️ The cloud native community continues to grow: Education is vitally important

@pritianka mentioned in her opening keynote that 65% of attendees were new to KubeCon. And a lot of these folks were new to the cloud native space

More, and new, education is needed

Kubernetes Borg/Omega history topic 10: In honor of #KubeConEU and the 5th anniversary of open-sourcing Kubernetes, I’ll add more perspective from the Borg and Omega teams to the origin story
Internally, Google puts a lot of emphasis on both resource efficiency and engineering efficiency. For both reasons, back in June 2013, a few months before GCE was ready to GA (cloudplatform.googleblog.com/2013/12/google…), the Borg and GCE teams started to work more closely to improve both
The initial focus gravitated towards directly supporting features needed by Cloud in Borg so that Cloud wouldn't need to work around the the lack of those features (see my previous comment on 2-level scheduling: )

Hey, you are all at #kubeconEU and drinking from the fire hose this week. I'd like to pitch to you to consider contributing actively to the community if you haven't already to help us all avoid the tragedy of the commons. Here's some things to get your started (1/16)
Every SIG is short handed when it comes to reviews! example sig-node put out a call for folks to help with issue triage. IMHO all sigs need help with both Issue triage and PR reviews - groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/ku… (2/16)
There is a few of us working on migrating Kubernetes project infrastructure over to the CNCF, this work crosses a whole bunch of SIGs. Here's where to find info on that work - github.com/kubernetes/com… (3/16)
