Hardly anybody remembers this and credit LBJ with initiating Civil Rights Acts.
Senate Majority Leader L.B. Johnson had strongly opposed Civil Rights and had been installed in his position by Southern Democrats in order to block civil rights legislation.

Being very politically astute, LBJ saw the writing on the wall, he no longer blocked Civil Rights bills but diminished much of their impact via amendments. He did not want the GOP to be the party of Civil Rights, he wanted it for the Democrat party, to get the black vote.
Once President, #LBJ took up the issue. Though Eisenhower had signed his 2 Civil Rights bills without much fanfare, #LBJ made his signing of it a big media event.
#LBJ made black Americans wait 7 more years to give them what Eisenhower wanted to in 1957.

Did the Young Prince grow up under the watchful eye and protection of an organization designed by his Father for a “special” purpose? One can only speculate the true depths of “the plan”. What or who is the beam of light? Can one man bring a nation together and heal the wounds

I saw the movie #Apollo13 with #LunarModule Program Director #JoeGavin. Now it’s time to tell the forgotten story—which that film doesn’t show—of how he & his #Grumman #Team helped rescue the astronauts with a #LMLifeboat while the world watched: andrewerickson.com/2020/04/apollo… #Apollo50
Five decades ago, during the aborted #Apollo13 mission of April 1970, #Grumman Aerospace Corporation’s #LunarModule saved 3 astronauts by becoming a lifeboat-tugboat. Throughout the crisis, #LM Program Director #JoeGavin manned his post @NASA’s #MissionControl Center in #Houston.
Gavin led a multi-hundred-person team in Houston & Bethpage, NY to help coordinate assessment & use of the #LM’s capabilities for emergency #LunarLifeboat role.

Gavin, virtually all of his colleagues + contemporaries & #Grumman itself have subsequently departed from the scene.

Replace "oligarchy" and "authoritarianism" with T-R-U-M-P and people might actually listen.
Cue all the folks who hate Bernie claiming that socialism is bad when at least half their daily lives are *stops to get mail and also remembers I'm on Internet* filled with small s socialism.
#Bernie is his own worst enemy with his incessant buzzwords.
The FACT is, we need Dem Socialism desperately as a modality, but the #GOP has so tainted the word "socialism" that people forget what it really means.

Our MOST socialist prez was #LBJ, who gave us the #VRA, #CRA, #Medicare, #Medicaid, #SNAP, #NEA, ##PBS, #NPR. So...it's doable.

Folks hate it when I remind them that our most progressive president was #LBJ, because someone told them it was #FDR.

(But it would have been great if FDR's VP #HenryWallace had succeeded him instead of #Truman.)

LBJ.
Almost a Socialist.
Unmatched to this day.
For those unfamiliar with LBJ, he gave us:
#CivilRightsAct
#VotingRightsAct
War on Poverty
Great Society
##Medicare
#Medicaid
Head Start
Immigration and Nationality Act (expanding immigration)
doubled federal spending on education
expanded wilderness preservation
gun control
LBJ also gave us:
Food Stamp Act (now SNAP)
Regional Medical Program
Higher Education Act
Public Broadcasting Act
National Endowment for the Humanities
National Endowment for the Arts

And yes, he gave us Vietnam.
But he was the most Socialist president in US history.

Ok I just finished my last #Audible #Audiobook. Time to trade them all in and get new ones. For my personal record I am going to tweet all the book, that I have listened to in the last few months. Ok here we go.
Learned more about #JFK than I have in my life. I really enjoyed this one. It's long, but for someone like me that didn't live through that time period, it was good at giving a sense of just how close we came to nuclear war and how JFK avoided it.

Another President I knew barely anything about, #LBJ. This book was really good too. I will probably listen to it again because I would like to be able to retain and repeat some of the stories that prove how corrupt #LBJ (and the Democrats) were. audible.com/pd/B00BFYJQJQ?…

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

If you are confused about who voted the #CivilRightsAct into law, here's the historical record.

SPOILER ALERT: It was the party of #LBJ--the Democrats. govtrack.us/congress/votes…
Unlike modern-day racist Southern #GOP leader @SenateMajLdr McConnell, who blocked #SCOTUS hearings for #MerrickGarland because he felt @POTUS44 wasn't owed a full 4yr term, #LBJ signed the most sweeping anti-racist and anti-poverty legislation in US history.
#CivilRightsAct
Just five months after the #CivilRightsAct was passed, the country voted overwhelmingly to return #LBJ to the White House, 49 weeks after the assassination of #JFK.

Voters thought LBJ was far more capable of holding the nation together amidst growing racial and societal strife.
