Long Crichel is a small and rather sleepy village in the Cranborne Chase.
So shockwaves must have rippled through the lanes in 1945 when a group of artists, critics, authors and gay rights activists moved in to the Long Crichel House… right next to the church.

Long Crichel House had been the church rectory until 1945 when it was sold to music critic and novelist, Eddy Sackville-West; his partner, music critic, Desmond Shawe-Taylor and Edward Eardley Knollys of the Bloomsbury Set. Soon, literary critic, Raymond Mortimer joined them.

The new owners of Long Crichel House had a wide circle of creative and influential friends who would meet here. The house – and village - became a retreat for like-minded people, including writers, composers, poets, artists and actors.

If you’re a fan of books or films you might have heard of the “Bechdel Test” before. It’s a way to measure the representation of women in fiction.

What you might not be aware of are its origins in LGBT+ pop culture. Buckle up for a 🧵.

First, some background. What is the Bechdel Test anyway?

It’s simple. To pass the test the film needs:

1⃣ At least two women in it...
2⃣ ...who talk to each other...
3⃣ ...about something other than a man
Its creator is @AlisonBechdel, a prominent cartoonist in the US. Her comics and graphic novels talk about everything from sexuality, gender roles and dysfunctional family life.

Her memoir “Fun Home,” based on her childhood, was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2013.

This is Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin (1983), an educational children’s book intended to reduce anti-gay prejudice. It was quickly labelled ‘gay propaganda’ and wielded as a weapon and ‘evidence’ against the #LGBT community, leading to the introduction of #Section28 #LGBTHM21
Danish author, Susanne Bosche, created the book to help children ‘...understand themselves and the society they live in.’…

However the book became the catalyst for one of the most pernicious pieces of legislation in recent times.
In 1986 The Sun ran the headline “Vile Book In School: Pupils See Pictures of Gay Lovers”. The fact that the book was published by Gay Men’s Press in the UK simply ‘confirmed’ this view.

While figures like Alan Turing are household names, many people who advanced LGBT+ rights in the UK aren’t as well known.

Here’s a 🧵 on a few people you should know.

Allan Horsfall (1927 - 2012):
Often called the “grandfather of the modern gay rights movement in Britain”, he helped partially decriminalise male homosexuality in 1967 and founded the “Campaign for Homosexual Equality” to fight against stigma. Image
Lisa Power:
The first openly LGBT+ person to speak at the UN in 1991, she was out as a lesbian in the 1970s at a time when discrimination was common.

She became Secretary-General of @ILGAWORLD in 1988 and co-founded @stonewalluk in '89 with Ian McKellen @mcashmanCBE and others Image

Thread:#LGBTHM21 For Clarification: I protested at school in 1996-1998 at section 28.Watched the #LGBTQ community in my school bullied within a inch of their lives. Was told at meeting wasn't schools role to manage & I'd grow out if it.
It's been 25 years…
I didn't ever grow out of it. It was repealed 5 years later When I was 21!!

So thank you to the #LGBTQ community groups across the NW that got many of us through that era, including @GLYSSwarrington for me. Today I'm a teacher, and appalled we ever had it! #LGBTHM21
I am however very proud to as a #bisexual be raising a very confident #pansexual daughter. Who knows nothing of ever feeling bad about who she chooses to love or be with, just thinks that's normal and people are different, get over it ❤👍
