I'm live at the pro-traffic rally in Oxford city centre. Ostensibly a protest against LTNs, or low-traffic neighborhoods, it's an intoxicating mix of far-right conspiracy slogans, antisemitism and really terrible hip-hop.
There's a fairly hefty police presence, and turnout occupies about a third of Broad Street at its widest. There's about an equal contingent of confused tourists.
Some of the many inventive signs at the rally. There's a great deal of information about chemtrails, the WEF and the Rothschilds.

The Bruce Grove West Green low traffic neighbourhood goes live today.

There are a few metrics for judging an #LTN – including what it does for those who would like to cycle to get around, but only if it feels safe. On this, this particular LTN delivers in absolute ♠️s.
🧵1/13
Why? Because it radically improves two key cycle routes in the borough – one running north to south from Enfield down to Hackney and the other running east to west straight across Haringey. Details in a moment, but first…

Check out this slice of cycling history in the area! Back in 1938 the TV cameras were there when a model traffic area to prepare kids for cycling on road opened in Lordship Rec, right in the middle of the LTN. It remains much loved.

It took mum 3 hours to get to her medical appointment in the city centre this afternoon from East Oxford due to #LTN traffic. She’s a pensioner with underlying health issues and mobility issues, uses a walking stick. Ordinarily her journey would take her a maximum of 1.5 hours.
Mum left home two hours before her appointment to ensure she got there on time. She had to wait 40 minutes for her bus home because of excessive traffic in East Oxford due to the implementation of LTN’s. These are just some of the stories I’ve heard from residents this week.
Yesterday a woman stopped me as I walked past a bus stop she was stood at. She recognised me and wanted me to know she’s a carer and lives in Blackbird Leys. She said it took her an hour and a half to get to her vulnerable client in Cowley. Before LTNs it took her 20 minutes.

(1/4) FINAL weekend post from me on Bounds Green people and their views on the possible #LTN. I’m very excited as I managed to track down the elderly man with the trolley from Friday night!! He’s called Brian Moore and he’s 86. He’s lived in Bounds Green for… 82 years…!
(2/4) He went to Bounds Green Infant School when he was 5- in 1939, just when WW2 started. He can remember hearing doodlebugs overhead. He had a shop on Myddleton Road called ‘George D Moore’ that sold men’s clothes, that he took it over from his dad. He loves it round here.
(3/4) I showed people this photo, and my neighbour Shaun who grows amazing Hollyhocks, recognised the woman. He told me to find Helen who lives in the ‘white house’ on the next road. I knocked on all the white houses and eventually found Helen, and she rang Brian.

(1/4) Re #LTN’s, I’ve heard a lot of people say: ‘But what about disabled people? They need to be able to drive…!’ as if all disabled people are against LTNs. But this just isn’t true. Take my lovely neighbour @SalliBh for example…
(2/4) Salli’s here with son Jesse, grand-daughter Tilly and greyhound Phaen. She’s hugely passionate about having an LTN round here. She said that rat-runners have been speeding so fast, she has trouble getting across the road quick enough…
(3/4) And has had some terrifyingly close encounters. She’d also like her grand-daughter Tilly to be able to ride a bike round here, but doesn’t think it’s currently safe…. Her son Jesse says that yes, he might have to drive a longer route, but it’s worth it to know that…

See thread from @SarahJ_Berry below- so true…. This elderly chap last night, who must have been 80-odd, was happily chatting away while walking down the middle of the road with his trolley. Apparently the pavements are much too bumpy… he would love quieter roads… #LTN
I was terrified about him on this corner bless him! They shoot round at 65MPH!

We always said that the Oval #LTN would transform our neighbourhood for the better.

And now the data bears that out....

Traffic within the LTN & on boundary roads ⬇️ 8%

Traffic within the LTN ⬇️ 25%

Traffic on boundary roads ⬇️ 2%

beta.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/…
On individual roads within the triangle the drop in motorised traffic looks like this:

Dorset Road ⬇️ 35%
Fentiman Road ⬇️ 46%
Albert Square ⬇️ 95%
Claylands Road ⬇️ 78%
Aldebert Terrace ⬇️ 5%
And on the boundary roads the change in volumes of all motorised vehicles breaks down as follows:

Clapham Road (A3) ⬇️ 7%
Harleyford Road (A202) ⬇️ 1%
South Lambeth Road (A203) ⬆️ 3%

THREAD: Can’t wait for @IslingtonBC's People Friendly Streets programme to come to our ward this autumn. Highbury West will become a Low Traffic Neighbourhood. By preventing through-traffic cutting across the area, it'll make our streets cleaner, healthier and safer for everyone. Image
Our winning @IslingtonLabour 2018 manifesto said: ‘We see the need to close certain roads to through-traffic to prevent rat-running, make neighbourhoods more liveable and improve cycling routes. We will investigate doing this in consultation with local residents and businesses.’ Image
Our online consultation on People Friendly Streets, which began in May 2020, drew 24,610 unique visitors, making 5,693 comments, with 39,000 agreements to those comments. 12 months after the #LTN goes in under an Experimental Traffic Order, we'll ask residents for feedback on it. Image

Update on Sutton North #LTN launched on 14th September. We are trying to achieve the following: 1) Improve safety in the Grennell Road and Benhill Wood Road area by reducing traffic levels and speeds. 2) Reduce air pollution due to lower traffic numbers.
3) Make the area more pleasant and safer for children. 4) Reduce the number of non-resident vehicles cutting through the area. To achieve that we are trialling: 4 road closures to motor vehicles and 20mph speed limit in the North Sutton area.
These measures are in response to a residents survey in 2017, when you told us that you felt there was too much traffic in the area and a further consultation earlier this year on a 20mph speed limit. When the idea was recently proposed for the addition of a closure in...

THREAD - Browning Avenue area #LTN. Ahead of the launch on Monday 21st September hopefully this helps clarify a lot of the questions I have received about this scheme #LDNStreetSpace.
Firstly I appreciate that many are skeptical & don't think it will work. That's why this is a trial. I will be monitoring the situation and pushing for any adjustments when necessary, including lobbying for more money if needed.
It will take time for this scheme to bed in before residents see the full benefits but if it becomes clear that it doesn't work it will be removed. The public consultation page will be up once the scheme is in place.

Changes are now being made to improve the quality of life in Esher Avenue and Wrayfield Road and the surrounding roads. We are trialling the following changes: 1) Road closure of Esher Avenue at its junction with Wrayfield Road opposite the access to Fairlands Park.
Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to enter.
2) Double yellow line waiting restrictions either side of the closure point.
3) A School Street scheme to restrict traffic outside Cheam Park Farm Primary school at drop off and pick up times, Mon-Fri during school term times.

We are trialling the following changes: 1)Trial road closure to motor vehicles in Kings Lane over the railway bridge at the junction with Hillcroome Road/ Upland Road.

THREAD: Here’s my statement on low-traffic areas/school streets to the Strategy & Resources Committee on 14th September. bit.ly/35J5VTC #LTN #StreetspaceLDN
The key question Cllrs should ask themselves is the following: What type of residential areas do you want for Sutton? Are Cllrs happy to keep the status quo? In certain residential areas this means turning a blind eye to thousands of cars rat-running,...
...trying to save time on their journey, and pumping toxic fumes directly into people’s bedrooms. Every individual will look at their own circumstances but my role is to look at the bigger picture and at the interest of all local residents.

@st_pye @RosamundAdoo_KD @OneCamberwell @outercircles @PaigeLDN__ @RMRsToo @jksmith34 @visitcamberwell @PaulLomax @BHamlets @KingsHeathLTN 1/ When side roads are closed to create #LTNs, some traffic may evaporate i.e. motorists may choose to walk, cycle, use public transport, travel at different time or not travel at all. Experts say around 14% median #trafficevaporation but acknowledge the impact of #coronvirus.
@st_pye @RosamundAdoo_KD @OneCamberwell @outercircles @PaigeLDN__ @RMRsToo @jksmith34 @visitcamberwell @PaulLomax @BHamlets @KingsHeathLTN 2/ The vast majority of the traffic will find alternative routes including on the boundary roads. This was shown in Waltham Forest LTN with an increase of 3%, 11% and 28% on the boundary roads. We'd likely see a rise on other surrounding roads but sadly they were not monitored.
@st_pye @RosamundAdoo_KD @OneCamberwell @outercircles @PaigeLDN__ @RMRsToo @jksmith34 @visitcamberwell @PaulLomax @BHamlets @KingsHeathLTN 3/ Even if 14% of #LTN traffic 'evaporates', the remaining traffic has to go somewhere.

What we see is an increase in the main road traffic growth for Waltham Forest vs London index from Department for Transport data.
