Why we need to talk about policing of ALL Black folks, not just men:

The #SayHerName hashtag (by @sandylocks) was a call for attention to Black women murdered by police i.e. #MaKhiaBryant and how our expectation that this issue only affects Black men misses the full picture.
The African American Policy Forum released a report entitled Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women in 2015 to highlight this overlooked issue. Later that same year, #SandraBland died while incarcerated and still ruled a suicide.…
.@washingtonpost has been tracking police killings since 2015 and found by 9/2020, 247 women had been killed by police, 48 (19.4%) were Black women. What names do you hear most often or see in a hashtag? Killings of Black women receive less attention.…

As more Americans grapple with fundamental questions about race and the police, Fault Lines digs into our archives to share 12 episodes on the crisis in US policing.

From violence and impunity, to militarization and surveillance, a thread of documentaries about the police ⬇️
In Ferguson, protests in 2014 and their disproportionate, heavy-handed police reaction showed that the killing of #MichaelBrown sparked something bigger—exposing tensions that had been bubbling beneath the surface for years.
Months after the Ferguson unrest, we returned to investigate why the relationship between police and local black communities is fraught with distrust.

For many, #MichaelBrown was a symbol for an entire system unfairly tilted against black communities.

When we interviewed the head of the Chicago police union in 2016 about #LaquanMcDonald we asked about a police code of silence. His response: “There’s a code of silence everywhere” and then he brought up churches covering up child sex abuse
That comment by Dean Angelo made it into the @TheJusticeDept scathing report on the Chicago Police Department Image
Our 2016 @AJFaultLines episode “The Contract” looked at how Chicago’s police union contract gave officers special privileges when they were being investigated in a shooting: police are given 24 hours to “cool off” before investigators can interview them.

Racial injustice has been sustained by narratives of fear & anger, argues #BryanStevenson. "To fight against those narratives we need other narratives." Educate yourself on injustice & the systematic criminalization of blackness through these Peabody winning & nominated programs.
@Ava DuVernay's primer on the criminalization of African Americans, "@13thfilm," traces the story from racial slavery to convict leasing systems, from #JimCrow terror to mass incarceration as a way to exercise social control of black populations.…

The "74 Seconds" podcast series from @MPRnews details how police pulled over #PhilandoCastile for a broken taillight and 74 seconds later he was dead from seven shots into Castile's car.…

THREAD: #KimFoxx and her opponent #BillConway are neck and neck in the race for Cook County State’s Attorney. Regardless of how you feel about the role and responsibilities of the SA’s office, here’s why the choice to #CancelConway is an easy one:…
Conway is an acolyte of former State’s Attorney #AnitaAlvarez. Alvarez was voted out decisively through the #ByeAnita campaign, after helping bury the murder of #LaquanMcDonald in 2015. This is in part how #KimFoxx won the office. #CancelConway…
Conway’s campaign is bankrolled by the #CarlyleGroup, a billion $ arms dealer (headed by his dad) responsible for the teargas used in #BlackLivesMatter protests in Ferguson and in occupied #Palestine. The group is also a large donor to #Trump’s reelection campaign. #CancelConway

1/ Chicago, the nation’s third-biggest city and a frequent political target of President Donald Trump, is facing a history-making municipal #electionday today.

We asked our colleagues at @ProPublicaIL to explain why it’s especially significant:
2/ The city will elect its first black woman as mayor — either Lori Lightfoot or Toni Preckwinkle.…
3/ Two-term Chicago Mayor @RahmEmanuel — former chief of staff to @BarackObama — is leaving office after facing widespread criticism for his handling of the fatal police shooting of #LaquanMcDonald.

Let's remember this cop academy has NOTHING TO DO with bringing jobs or economic investment to the west side, nor to Black communities #NoCopAcademy
The contractor AECOM and the city's own records show the building of the academy will bring 110 temporary construction jobs to Garfield Park, and only 15% of those are required to be "local resident" hires #NoCopAcademy
That's less than 20 temporary jobs for a community with massive unemployment and 40% of residents living below the poverty line #NoCopAcademy

Cook County Judge Domenica Stephenson just acquitted the officers who tried to cover up the #LaquanMcDonald shooting. Data shows she has a history of making racist decisions as a judge. A thread.
Usually data isn’t available showing how individual judges make decisions. But Cook County has extensive data including 1,640 defendants who Judge Domenica Stephenson has sentenced. The data shows she incarcerates black people at higher rates than whites for the same offenses.
Here’s the overall disparity in her sentencing to incarceration rates by race. She sentenced half of white defendants to incarceration but *two-thirds* of black defendants (the rest generally were sentenced to probation). But let’s dive deeper...

Trial begins today for three current/former Chicago cops accused of covering up what really happened the night #LaquanMcDonald was shot. This has kind of flown under the radar compared to Van Dyke’s trial but it is worth your attention.…
Van Dyke was charged in a single shooting that lasted seconds. These three are accused of a conspiracy that lasted for months. Prosecutors have framed this as putting the police “code of silence” on trial.
A few things to look out for over the next week:

Today's first defense witness: Dr. Laurence Miller, a psychologist who's expected to tell the jury what he believes went through Jason Van Dyke's mind before he shot #LaquanMcDonald.
Dr. Miller, a psychologist who evaluated Jason Van Dyke, says humans have a natural reaction to get away from danger. On the other hand, he says, "First responders ... they have to run into the danger." #LaquanMcDonald

1/ A little delayed because I’m starting a fellowship in NYC this week, but I wanted to share more about how @caylaclements_ & I reported our story about how Chicago's alternative HSs have disproportionately high numbers of student deaths…
@caylaclements_ 2/ This story began with a FOIA request for student transfer data for another story. When I got the data back, I realized there was a special code for students that CPS had been notified were deceased.
@caylaclements_ 3/ Right away it was clear there were a lot of alternative HSs on the list. Over 4 school yrs, 108 alternative HS students died, out of a total of 425 students district-wide. That means a tiny fraction of the district's enrollment made up a quarter of all student deaths.
