The reason people don't have homes, according to Boris Johnson, is not the profit-driven and dysfunctional process of land use decision-making.
It's not the UK's profound wealth inequalities.
It's newts.
David Icke says the problem is lizards.
The PM says the problem is newts
If you want a newt-free, lizard-free explanation of our land and house crisis, please read our #LandForTheMany report: landforthemany.uk
In the interests of balance, you can also read this brilliant satirical novel by Karel Capek, which appears to confirm Boris Johnson's thesis. Image

Today the Mail on Sunday publishes the ruling on its lies about #LandForTheMany.
But @IpsoNews has allowed this ruling to lose its force:
1. It's been 6 MONTHS since the lies were published
2. It's AFTER the election
3. The paper could choose its own, very boring headline.
@IpsoNews It took the dogged, determined effort of @darkgreener (Anna Powell-Smith), who has a brilliant, forensic mind, even to get this far. I appreciate @IpsoNews's apology, but it's clear to me that the organisation is not fit for pupose. theguardian.com/media/2019/dec…
@IpsoNews @darkgreener It was because of these unconscionable delays, as the Mail on Sunday used every possible device to impede a resolution, pushing it past the election date, that I found myself breaking an embargo for the first time in my career this month: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

IPSO has ruled that a major claim in the Tory campaign was based on a total lie, fabricated by the Mail on Sunday. But because it took *5 months* to reach this decision, it won't be published till AFTER the election. So we've decided to break the embargo theguardian.com/media/2019/dec…
This case should have been so easy to determine. The Mail on Sunday published a flat-out falsehood about our #LandForTheMany report, that was weaponised into a massive Tory attack line: "Corbyn is coming for your home!!". The 5 months it took to resolve is inexcusable.
I've never been involved in breaking an embargo before, but in this case I see it as fully justified. A massive political lie should not be allowed to stand across an election. Sorry, IPSO, but the truth is what matters.

Thank you @paulwaugh for exposing yet another outrageous Tory lie about our #LandForTheMany report. huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/tory-cor…
@paulwaugh One of the biggest problems we face is that there no longer appear to be penalties for political lying. The Conservatives know this, and have abandoned all inhibitions about what they say. It's getting as bad as Trump here.
@paulwaugh Yes, you lying twerps, but it was also clearly signposted as "proposals to" the Labour Party, not Labour Party policy. If you can't tell the difference, you're unfit for office. Image

Appalling to see how the Tories are using our #LandForTheMany report to scaremonger. First, these are *recommendations* to Labour and not Labour Party policy. But even if our report did represent party policy, the Tories are grossly misrepresenting its proposals:
1) the Tories claim Labour will introduce a ‘Movers Tax’, selectively quoting our report as evidence. In fact we *rejected* the idea of taxing the capital gains on main residences, and instead follow @IPPR & @resfoundation in calling for an overhaul of inheritance tax system.
2) the Tories claim Labour will introduce a ‘Homes Tax', and are making wild assertions about what this will cost average households. In fact, we recommended a Progressive Property Tax to replace council tax which would result in LOWER rates of taxation for most properties ->->

A thread on "Right To Buy for private tenants" that @johnmcdonnellMP and @UKLabour are considering and which was discussed briefly by @michaeljswalker & @AaronBastani on a recent @novaramedia podcast - some concerns and an alternative suggestion for achieving same goal 1/n
@johnmcdonnellMP @UKLabour @michaeljswalker @AaronBastani @novaramedia I endorse the principle that we should help tenants who want to escape the private rented sector to do so, and that we should find ways of sharing out some of the eye-watering windfall gains and rent extraction that landlords have enjoyed throughout housing boom/crisis.
2/n
But there are several problems with the Right To Buy for Private Tenants proposal:

1. Tenants would only be eligible for the discount if they have been renting in the same property for 3+ years (and presumably had been on an official tenancy agreement for this whole time).

Good grief. A third furore in the billionaire press about our #LandForTheMany report. This time they're claiming we recommend a capital gains tax on main residences. We consider but then *REJECT* this option in the report:
Yet the Mail, Times, Telegraph, Sun, Express, Boris Johnson and Philip Hammond are all promoting the fiction that #LandForTheMany proposes the removal of the CGT exemption on main residences. I know this is the era of fake news, but this is getting ridiculous.
And, three weeks and perhaps 50 furious articles after #LandForTheMany was published, not a single journalist from any of these newspapers has contacted us. Nor has any BBC programme, or any mainstream broadcaster except LBC and Talk Radio, invited us to talk about it.

Here we go again: yet another ill-informed, paranoid rant about our #LandForTheMany report, this time by @dcsandbrook in the Daily Mail. Yes Dominic, we really are coming for your children's favourite books, once we've slaughtered all the firstborn ...
The billionaire press has always attacked progressive tax reform, for obvious reasons. But this scaremongering has reached the point of self-parody.
For those of you who want to understand what we are saying and why, here's our report. landforthemany.uk
I'm just relieved that the Daily Mail, none of whose journalists appear to have read the report, hasn't seen the chapter where we propose the mass internment of middle-class householders, the drowning of their pets and the controlled demolition of Northcliffe House.

Today we launch a report that should - and could - change the face of Britain. It's our report to the Labour Party on the most neleglcted issue in politics - Land. Here's my column explaining it. #landforthemany theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
You can read the report here. It took us the best part of a year to write. It's a radical but practical guide to changing everything - from the price of housing to the defence of the living world. landforthemany.uk
The control and ownership of land affects almost every aspect of our lives. It determines whether houses are affordable, cities are liveable and nations meet the needs of their people. But we scarcely talk about it. Why? Because to do so is to meet power head-on. #landforthemany
