Mangroves are natures own disaster manager. Just 13 seconds to understand how it protects us from Tsunami, Cyclones & storms. Today is #MangrovesDay.
Above video is by courtesy of Dutch research institute Deltares. But how Mangroves protect us from these disasters. Here is a thread.

Mangrove forest after a cyclone. The line of defense after a cyclone.
#Mangrove; not only home for various species but also buffer against #Disaster. Tropical country like India, with densely populated 7500 km long coastline, will be effected by cyclones more due to #ClimateChange. Salt tolerant species acts as a shield. Reposting my old tweets.

Short🧵. As many people know, Laxton, in Nottinghamshire, is one of the few places in England where large-scale #medieval open #fields survive, still collectively organised & managed in the same way that they were 6 and more centuries ago. … /1
The term ‘open fields’ has become shorthand for large (often huge) areas of arable, subdivided into unhedged blocks (‘furlongs’), subdivided in turn into narrow strips (‘selions’). #medieval #landscape. /2
And the strips (selions) in each furlong were shared out, one by one in repetitive order, between the village’s farmers. This 1617 map from Balsham, Cambs., names of the farmer of each strip. By 1617 some had acquired & merged neighbouring strips, others had subdivided theirs. /3

- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.

We just need to protect them.

They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

'The 2017 select committee inquiry into #parks got a staggering response from the public', says Clive Betts MP, opening #ParksAndGreenSpacesAPPG meeting reviewing what has happened since its report was published...
Betts points out that the funding of councils is a big element in the success of #parks - as the cost of social care (a statutory service) goes up, there is less ££ for green spaces (which are not statutory)...
Betts: 'We didn't think making #parks a statutory service would help - after all, #libraries are a statutory service, but that didn't protect them from closure...' #ParksAndGreenSpacesAPPG

Well, this is an astonishingly poor effort from @royalsociety; a #DataGovernance "explainer" that tips its hand by its examples (i.e. health data) but not once in 28 pages mentions significant bodies like @HRA_Latest, for #ResearchEthics approval, or #CAG!
royalsociety.org/-/media/policy… Image
While there are a whole bunch of players in what is an increasingly crowded/confused/confusing landscape, to miss out two of the key *statutory* #governance bodies seems more than a little remiss 🤦🏻‍♂️
If you are interested, and want to dig a bit deeper into the (#regulatory, not just #governance) #landscape around #health #data in particular, I recommend @EleHrwch & @claumartinezv's map:
