Why are these new road expansions and railway invasions happening the hills?
1. Nation State Making - Making 'inaccessible' hills part of India - chaining them to the centre if you like.

2. Money Making - Obviously large infrastructural projects oils the new
30% economy (earlier it was 15%) most of this 30 is leached to contractors in North and West. Projects would be granted to ostensibly government construction companies or large corporations but then it would be outsourced to usually construction groups headed by
ruling party lackeys. Electoral bonds and returns on influence investments. Now this gets subcontracted to local busybody suppliers and contractors for much reduced costs.

3. Buy Environmental Impact Assessment Reports from these EIA shops in Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, who just

On Nov 15, 2021 an #AtmosphericRiver hit the #Fraser Valley and Canyon. In support of a BC Salmon Restoration Innovation Fund #BCSRIF project and with support from @HakaiInstitute, we flew the Fraser Canyon to document the #floods and #landslides that occurred. 1/18 #BCStorm
Our research examines how the size and frequency of landslides in Fraser Canyon affect river morphology, flow dynamics, #salmon migration, and their genetics. What follows are names, pictures, and coordinates of #landslide events we identified, both big and small. 2/18 #BCStorm
Wahleach Slides (49°14'10.01"N; 121°40'40.35"W). Debris flows tracks that fail every few years on East side of Fraser River near the Wahleach Hydro Plant. They cross the TMX pipeline construction. There are two major deposits on #Highway1 and many smaller failures. 3/18 #BCStorm

#Vietnam #QuangTri #Landslides

A landslide early on Sunday left at least 22 soldiers missing in Vietnam's central province of Quang Tri, the government said, as the Southeast Asian country battles the worst flooding in years.
Intense rains since early October have caused floods and mudslides that have killed at least 64 people in central Vietnam, with more heavy rainfall expected over the next few days.
The landslide hit the barracks of a unit of Vietnam's 4th Military Region, the government said in a statement on its website, days after another landslide killed 13 people, mostly soldiers, in the neighboring province of Thua Thien Hue.

#Floods and #wildfires are both subject to regression to the tail. The same holds for #droughts, #hurricanes, #landslides, #icemelt, #sealevelchange, and other phenomena closely related to the climate crisis. Image
This tells us that understanding regression to the tail and how to mitigate its specific manifestations for climate will be key to mitigating the climate crisis.
Here it is worth remembering that regression to the tail for the climate crisis will be just as indifferent to human ignorance and folly as regression to the tail is for covid-19.

Subduction-zone mega-thrust #earthquakes, the most powerful earthquakes, can produce #tsunamis through a variety of structures that are missed by simple models. (THREAD)
The basic model shows rock above the convergent plate boundary being compressed and bent as it stores elastic energy. Once friction is overcome, the overriding plate slides abruptly up the fault causing the leading edge to heave seawater upward generating a #tsunami.
In 2011, the M9 #Japan #earthquake ruptured a fault area 500kms x 200kms over an interval of nearly 3 min. Surveys of sea-floor bathymetry before and after the earthquake document up to 50 m of fault displacement at near the Japan Trench.
