Thread: I don’t share a lot of re: my work on SM, but I am proud of the work my district’s Spanish teachers did and are continuing to do around our new adoption & additional opportunities I’m facilitating this year for my district world language teachers. 1/16 #langchat @NADSFL
2/ A representative team of middle and high school teachers piloted three programs and evaluated each along our key indicators. Students and community provided input as well. A consensus process was used to select the materials that would be recommended.
3/ As part of our recommendation, I successfully advocated for technology for every classroom so that teachers and students would have dedicated, consistent access to practice and assessment resources in all modes of communication.

I want to make myself clear here. I don’t believe the history of accomplishments of BIPOC or any minoritized community should be relegated to a month. I believe the 🇺🇸 school calendar - the timeline in history books have been designed to do so #langchat #BlackHistoryMonth

around 9:25 Bob mentions a problematic representation in a Latin textbook, but won't name the textbook bc he "doesn't want to bash any books" and I'm wondering about his choice to characterize the naming of sources w/problematic themes or stereotypes as "bashing" them.

At 11:55: The question is "do content creators owe us a constant stream of revisions?"

I find the way this question is posited to be very interesting as well. There's a difference between feedback based on teachers' preferences, and criticism based on racist tropes & stereotypes

While diversifying our #FVR #CI readers let’s remember-white people writing “diverse” characters isn’t the answer.

In “Tears We Cannot Stop” Dr. Dyson details how white writers appropriate the culture and stories of POC.

I think his comments apply to us.

I was inspired by this graphic to start tracking the books I read and use in my Spanish classroom. I want to invite other World Language teachers to join me! I'll be using the hashtag #WLBookAudit to share what I learn. #langchat

Here's a thread of what I've done so far. Diversity in children's books 2018. Children of various racial makeups standing in front of mirrors to represent how many books feature characters who look like them. White, 50%; Animals 27%, African/African American 10%; Asian Pacific Islander 7%, Latinx 5%, American Indians 1%.
First, if you haven't read the article that accompanies the infographic, I highly recommend it. But one important update is this version uses broken mirrors to "illustrate the continued misrepresentation of the underrepresented communities"
Knowing how often underrepresented communities are misrepresented in literature, I make a conscious effort to include as many books #ownvoices authors as I can find. In WL circles we often call these #authres, although that term can be problematic(that's for another convo though)

Welcome to this week's live tweet! Today, we revisit our articles from last week (thread here: ) This week, we have special guest faculty member Professor James Uden. @i_nurmi opens the discussion by returning to a critical question: why Latin and Greek?
Though last week's discussion was fruitful and evocative, @i_nurmi points out that we skirted around and didn't really arrive at the ultimate question of why these classes are important, and how we convince our students these are important.
A big problem here is the perception of Latin as a "prestige language." A cohort mentions a panel at CANE last year with pushback against Latin as ID'd as "prestige Latin"; one panel speaker gave e.g. of students finding value in the language *because* of this identity...
