YES. Speaking Chinese-- Toisan dialect for me-- wasn't shameful, but wasn't valued. 1st gen didn't want 2nd gen to suffer #discrimination like they did. By the time my gen realized we wanted/saw value in connection, was too late. Wknd Chinese schl not enough. @SelfEvidentShow
Also, ironically, hypocrisy of racists shows in dominant U.S. culture's simultaneous demonizing of those who are bilingual & those who only speak English. Bc we are good enough to socialize w but not fully Other enough to be token and hired for "diversity." @SelfEvidentShow
I've gotten that as journalist. Employers see my face, assume multilingual, lose interest bc not fluent enough. Also, by some #AAPI orgs, as I have experience, but am 2nd/3rd gen, removed from immigrant narrative. #mediadiversity in U.S. prioritizes 1st gen POV. @SelfEvidentShow

President Nixon appointed General Vernon Walters as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence in 1972. Vernon spoke French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Chinese and Russian fluently.
Vernon loved #languages and enjoyed a friendly competition with fellow #linguists. He would engage two others in conversation and each time a person spoke, they had to talk in a new language. Once you ran through your repertoire of languages, you were eliminated.
Vernon's linguistic skills afforded him a myriad of opportunities. His simultaneous translation of a speech by Nixon in France prompted President Charles de Gaulle to say, "Nixon, you gave a magnificent speech, but your interpreter was eloquent."

Many families (mine included) face tough decisions on what #languages to speak at home. There's a lot of #myths about early #bilingualism , like:
-Kids will get confused
-They'll have lang delays
-They won't learn the majority/dominant language

More info: hanen.org/Helpful-Info/A…
In my family, my dad spoke #arabic and my mom spoke #english. My dad was concerned about me learning English so after about 5 y/o, we hardly spoke Arabic. Since I didn't have any Arabic-speaking peers or teachers, my Arabic suffered attrition and now I understand, but not speak
My case isn't uncommon either-many early #bilinguals and #heritagespeakers often don't have the linguistic support systems (at home or in school) to maintain their languages, due to factors such as lang myths, discrimination, lang policy in schools, etc

About 1/3 of you guessed right: #AmericanEnglish has about 14 vowel sounds. Here's a chart with 15 vowels (from #ucla) with examples and their #phonetic symbols (#ipa). The IPA is useful but controversial since there are euro-centric biases in its representation.
#vowels are cool since the range of them is huge. Some languages, like #hawaiian have 3, while #xoo has 31.

Usually, the less sounds in a language, the more complex the tone or word structure and the reverse.

Check out info on your language's sounds: phoible.org!
CORRECTION: #hawaiian has 5 vowels. Oops. However, many other #languages have 3 vowel systems, like #cheyenne
