"Do I miss my contemporaries from the music world? Of course I do. My colleagues like Mohd Rafi saab, Kishoreda (Kishore Kumar), Mukesh bhaiya, and Mannada (Manna Dey) were a constant part of my life.
I’d run into them at recordings on a daily basis. Relationships were not just about work.

Composers and poets like Madan bhaiya (Madan Mohan), Narendra Sharma, whom I called Daddy, Chitragupta saab, and Majrooh Sultanpuri saab used to come home regularly.
And I’d visit them. We were what is called family friends. Nowadays, people meet on video calls", Lata Mangeshkar shared in her final interview with First Post.

Asked who her favourite composers were. She laughed as she said,

Beyond her world of playback singing, few know that Lata Mangeshkar's musical tastes were way more eclectic.
She enjoyed listening to Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Nat King Cole, the Beatles, Barbra Streisand and Harry Belafonte.

She went to see Marlene Dietrich singing on stage and loved Ingrid Bergman's theatre.

She could also be found studio hopping at the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar's studio, where she bumped into his famous friend George Harrison.
In 1979, she became the first Indian to perform with the Wren Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Here's how she later recalled the experience in her own words:

"Around 1974, I went to London for my first overseas concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

It was 1948-49, Lata was going Bombay Talkies to record a song for film Ziddi. MD was Khemchand Prakash. She took local train from Grant road to Malad.
One young man was also in the same compartment. Lata Mangeshkar got down at Malad Station. He also got down.

#LataMangeshkar
When lata took a tanga for Bombay talkies, that young man did the same. After Reaching Lata complained KP that this young man was following her. Who is he?

KP introduced him as Ashok Kumar's younger brother, actor and singer.
That was the first time when lata and Kishore recorded a duet. This was the song.

This is to remind you that this was film of kishoreda as playback singer.

For many women with courtesanal pasts in the Hindu religion, association with brahminism and the Hindu right has provided some relief, they have sometimes been able to practice their art and achieve success as artists. Lata Mangeshkar is an example of this.
There are those who call her
"brahmin" &those that say she was from "devdasi"community. One needs to see it from the lens of the influence of Savarkar on her family, creation of gomantak maratha caste, her father's involvement in the nationalist project of Marathi natyasangeet..
The equations are no different today, for the left often reduces bahujan hereditary women to descendants of exploited victims of sexual abuse who were saved through reform. The choice to lean right, toward brahminic power has been a survival mechanism #LataMangeshkar

The film was ordinary, but Madan Mohan & Lata didi were together to create magic. Film sank.Songs will live forever. The story goes that #LataMangeshkar wept while recording this song. Check the first alaap, you will know why.Ahir Bhairav sung to perfection.
Generations will come and go but nobody will ever know how #LataMangeshkar sang this beauty in Maand. Jaidev made this incredibly difficult composition only for Didi. Dadra taal makes it even more complex and then every stanza has different tune.
And then Didi experimented with Maand again. This time she was 62 years old. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Gulzar and Lata Didi created Lekin- a monument to Indian music. Kesariya Balam- don’t forget didi could do this in 1991. She had started singing in 1942

Javed Akhtar once recalled a fascinating anecdote about Lata Mangeshkar's sur.
This song. ❤️
Lata once confessed to Gulzar her desire to playback for Dilip Kumar. Gulzar says she did it convincingly (not for DK) when she sang this melody which was originally conceptualised for a man singing about his lady love's perfumed eyes.

As we all pay homage to #LataMangeshkar , a short story that showcases her genius

Kamal Hassan & Ilaiyaraja were composing songs for the 1988 movie Sathyaa when they chanced upon a great tune! Raja insisted that only Lata can sing such a composition & Kamal agreed to it

1/n
Raja sat down with Vaali for writing the lyrics. He told him Lata ji is going to sing - so let’s make the Tamil words easy for her. They settled on using a grammatical form called ‘Rettai Kilavi’ which has small words repeating in every line like Kala Kala, Kulu Kulu

2/n
As the song got written down, eventually it turned out to be so pacy and complex to sing eventually!! When Lata ji came down to the studio to record, she was surprised by the lyrics & the difficulty of the rhythm of words!

Didn't anyone tell her that you don't look at a Muslim practice from feminism lens? In India, that's reserved only for Hindu beliefs. Now, liberals, feminists, Muslims and permutation & combination of all three are after her. Check replies to her.
- There's only one reason this poor animal was publicly butchered.
- Its the same reason why Muslim terrorists and Indian left, liberal jamaat use the 'gau mutra' jibe.
- Hatred for Hindus.
- And to show them their place by defiling what's dear to them.
The funniest part of the debate about #HijabisOurRight is the green-on-green. Let me explain - I saw one Muslim lady comment that why are clothes of these Muslim girls used as litmus test? Why can't they leave it outside the school and continue their studies? Why should they +

Over the past 4 months, we’ve conducted Mastermind Kerala 1.0 over Zoom.

One of the topics chosen in the final heat of the event was this: Movie Theatres in Kerala.

Here’s a thread on interesting info I found while setting these questions.

#Malayalamcinema #Malayalamfilms
1. The first permanent movie theatre in #Kerala was set up in #Thrissur by Kattookkaran Varunny Joseph (as Jos Bioscope Projections), following his bioscope shows at #ThrissurPooram. It exists today as Jos Theatre in the heart of the city in the Round. ImageImage
2. One of the projectors used by Joseph was exhibited for a long time at #Sapna in Thrissur, a theatre founded by his family. It was finally handed over to the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in 2020. Sapna, incidentally, took life as Rama Varma theatre in the 1930s. ImageImage
