If your argument to not use Latine or Latinx is based on popularity or familiarity, you’re missing the point.

The point is to be intentional with our language to center racial and gender equity. 🧵
Centering racial equity:
By using Latino/a instead of Hispanic, we recognize our African and Indigenous roots as well as non-Spanish speaking countries (Brazil and Haiti) and those that continue to speak their pre-colonization, native languages.
Centering gender equity:
By using Latinx or Latine instead of Latino/a, we recognize non-binary folks (which have long existed in our communities, look up “muxe”) and transgender folks who center that identity.

This #LatinxHeritageMonth, HuffPost is celebrating the Latinx community and the voices that exemplify its pride, success and diversity. One of those voices is “Vida” creator and showrunner Tanya Saracho. huffp.st/FPcIXeB
Saracho is trying to create the roles she didn’t have at the beginning of her career. When she moved to Chicago to act, the only roles available to her were what she calls “Maria roles”: often maids or prostitutes, with just one line.
So Saracho found ways to create work and spaces for herself and other Latinx artists. For years, Latinx audiences have been a major source of revenue for Hollywood. Yet their stories make up a disproportionately low portion of what gets told on screen.

So today we thought we’d tweet out her statement from the time as a reminder of why we fight so hard for everyone to get the abortion care they need:

The story of forced sterilization is not new and we haven't kept it in the past or learned from the past! #AbolishICE
The anti-abortion movement pushes their "we love babies" propaganda. But like Renee points out in this thread, it's really just about controlling fertility.

Today is the 1st day of "#LatinxHeritageMonth" and we're spending it reminding ppl tht forced sterilization of our community is genocide that has been happening to Black, Brown, & Indigenous ppls since this country's founding. If ur surprised u haven't been paying attention...
From legislation like the Hyde Amendement 2 fake clinics, there has been a long effort in this country to block POC from controlling their bodies. Despite being "pro life" many are just obsessed with controlling our bodies. Case in point:
Every Puerto Rican is a miracle! Have you read abt the tests in PR? AND in 2013 the @CIRonline reported that women incarcerated in a California prison had been illegally sterilized. @oboshealth discussed his history here: ourbodiesourselves.org/book-excerpts/…
