How do you validate your SaaS feature ideas?

If you have built and maintain software before, then you know the cost associated with building things nobody uses.

Here are a few cost of building the wrong things 👇

👩🏿‍💻 Development, this is a significant cost as engineers and UX talent are not cheap.

⚒️ Maintenance, engineers have to maintain this code forever until it is removed.
2/
🌅 Sunsetting, to remove and sunset features, this takes effort for coding and data migration.

⚕️Health, the mental health of the Engineers, Product Managers and UX suffers greatly when the feature they’ve worked so hard on is not used.

When I started teaching #prodmgmt in 2013, there was a huge need to concentrate on the user. Everything you read about the discipline was so focused on the business and generating requirements. We were lacking customer focus. /1
While companies still need a lot of work in this area, we've come a long way thanks to tireless efforts of people pushing the agendas in #leanstartup, #leanux, and customer-centricity.

But now, we've swung the pendulum the other way. /2
I see so many new product managers only focusing on what the customer asks for, frequently turning into "waiters" - they add these requests to the backlog, with no semblance of product strategy or what makes sense for the business. /3

I was reminded of the first time we taught together, and how we've learned, both as teachers, and about the material itself. /1
@Boogie I think our first class together was in 2011. (Let's say +/- 1 year.) We were luck to land a 12-class gig to teach #leanUX to a client with offices around the world. The gig went well and was expanded. We probably taught that 2-day class 20+ times over the next year or so. /2
@Boogie To get to have so many iterations is a blessing really. (I guess standup comics know this.) You get to try your material, get feedback, respond to questions, see what works and what doesn't. /3

I have stopped providing Wireframes to my clients. This has a shift in the focus and expectations of clients from a #UX Principal Consultant. Now they take a keen interest in Ecosystem Diagrams, Lumascapes, Unmoderated Observational Study, User Journey, improving Operations
before suggesting products to achieve an objective, Macro Economy Behaviour, Individual's Personality, Socio-Political and Demographic Constraints. I learned this by following mature ecosystems like the transaction between Doctor Consultants and Testing Labs.
Similarly, the transaction between Lawyer Consultants and Para Legal Team. So, now I pass all the documentation to the UI designer and achieve the design iteratively, progressing over Kanban or Scrum Agile Framework. Anyway, these days Design Systems have made it easy to follow

Lean Usability Testing Hiring. Usability Testing Landscape is growing with newer and sophisticated tests included over time. One Specialist may not be equipped with the knowledge of all the types of Usability Tests. So Job Portals need to device a way
to separate Specialist by their vocational expertise. This approach will directly impact the relationship between Client and Service provider. It will streamline Investment and make the UX process Lean.

When we wrote #leanux we wanted to help product design and development teams collaborate more effectively and ultimately build better products for their customers. The overwhelming feedback from readers has been (no surprise) that they want to work this way. However...
What we didn't expect was the amount of teams out there telling us things like "my boss won't let me work this way" or "my company would never let us talk to customers." Hearing this again and again gave us the sense that there was (at least) another conversation to be had. So...
We wrote another book - #senseandrespond . That book took the conversation up a level to leaders and makes the case that to stay competitive in today's business world you have to build continuous learning loops with your customers. I believe many orgs heard this message but...
