Siejka to resign in August so by-election soon after that for #Pembroke (ALP 8.7% but historically a swing seat). Winner will get an approx 2.5 year term through to 2025 elections. #politas #LegCo
Labor plus left independents currently hold 8/15 seats so there's potential for the left to lose its upper house majority here.
It's common for a few Clarence councillors to run for Pembroke. Will be interesting to see how the timing of the by-election fits in with the council elections and who if anyone runs for both.

3 years ago today, an event changed #HongKong forever: The police dispersed #antiELAB protesters outside of #LegCo on #Jun12. It marks the start of the (last) pro-democracy struggle of the city. A thread. (1/9)
At the moment when the police fired their first shot, I was being interviewed by the PTS #Taiwan. Link: bit.ly/3xi7STc. After the interview, I headed back to CITIC Tower and see what I could help. (2/9)
The atrium of the building was full of smoke and people were being treated by volunteer first responders. The police didn’t stop firing the teat gas outside of the LegCo and subsequently cleared off the area. The rest is history. (3/9)

[When op-eds, open letters and speeches at public hearings become excuses of political screening]

1. Today I received the letter from #Hongkong's electoral officer, questioning my political stance, a ploy commonly used by #Beijing to disqualify candidates from election.
2. The letter quotes following as excuses:
-@appledaily_hk coverage of my speech at @CECCgov public hearing on #HK autonomy
-my @washingtonpost op-ed commenting on #Beijing’s move to expelling US journalists
-an open letter to @SecPompeo co-signed by disbanded @demosisto & #HKers
3. Clearly, under the new #nationalsecuritylaw, political screening covers candidates’ social media accounts, media interviews and election flyers. Even an op-ed piece could be framed as “colluding with foreign forces” and used as excuses for political purges.

#LegCo FAQ

Since there seems to be some misconception about #LegCo thought I'd do a bit of responding to the FAQs. (1/ )
Do LegCo members only have meetings w Ministries once a year?

No. We meet them all year round. Some gets publicised (muzakarah sessions) when all or most of the members are present. Some are done behind closed doors, where we individually request with specific departments. (2/
It's during these closed-door meetings that we directly discuss issues that have been shared with us, that aren't suitable for the budget meeting. Usually smaller, personal issue cases or internal matters that can be resolved/answered. That's why not everything is at MMN (3/
