1: The J&K police is using the #UAPA against people for overcoming the longest-ever internet ban imposed in the world by using social media sites like Facebook & Twitter through #VPNs. If found guilty they can be arrested for up to seven years in jail.

2: The Government of India says such sites are blocked ‘to curb the misuse of the sites by miscreants for propagating false information/ rumours’. The Indian Government has almost total control over what information is coming out of the region.

3: While the Government has a duty & responsibility to maintain law and order in the state, filing cases under counter-terrorism laws such as #UAPA over vague & generic allegations and blocking social media sites– is not the solution.

Having grown up in Kashmir, I didn’t pause when the tourist desk at the airport was closed or think twice about the military presence - this had been a norm."

The use of the J&K Public Safety Act (PSA) on Farooq Abdullah, a former chief minister of J&K, is a blatant abuse of the law by the Indian government and latest in the series of human rights violations taking place in Kashmir.
A detention order was passed against Abdullah, who has allegedly been under house arrest since Aug 5, for ‘disturbing public order’.

The continuation of draconian laws against political dissidents despite promises of change signals a dishonest intent on part of the Indian Govt.
The PSA has a long history of being misused in J&K.

In our earlier briefing we documented how the indiscriminate use of PSA has allowed the Indian govt to circumvent the criminal justice system, undermine accountability, transparency & human rights: bit.ly/LawlessLaw19 Image

In the last week, I’ve spent time speaking with people living and working in #Kashmir - journalists, human rights lawyers and students.
I wanted to hear directly from girls living in Kashmir right now. It took a lot of work from a lot of people to get their stories because of the communications blackout. Kashmiris are cut off from the world and unable to make their voices heard. #LetKashmirSpeak
Here is what three girls told me, in their own words: “The best way to describe the situation in Kashmir right now is absolute silence. We have no way of finding out what’s happening to us. All we could hear is the steps of troops outside our windows. It was really scary.”

2/5 "The month-old blackout can't be prolonged any further as it has grossly impacted the daily lives of Kashmiri people, their emotional & mental well-being, medical care, as well as access to basic necessities & emergency services. It is tearing families apart” said Aakar Patel
3/5 Depriving an entire population of their right to freedom of expression, opinion and movement for an indefinite period is akin to taking the region back to the dark ages. ‘Naya Kashmir’ cannot be built without the Kashmiris.
