138 Human Beings have died from #COVID19 in Michigan's prisons

* One of the highest prison death rates in the country
* Over 3X the death rate in the general population

#VaccinateNow #LetMIPeopleGO
For those who don't know, Michigan is vaccinating people in prison over 65 currently, about 4k have been vaccinated.

But according to the CDC, everyone in prison is at high-risk and should be prioritized
People in prison cannot self-isolate, cannot socially distance, and cannot look over their own health care needs....here is a very strong article making the moral and substantive case for vaccinations in New York

Nightmare. Been working w/ local organizers & people imprisoned in Michigan since COVID. Things are dire. Sharing some recent updates from colleague. "He just tried to kill himself. Told me he was suicidal. Bought him a book. Said it helped. Not enough apparently." #letMIPeopleGo
"Justin has fluid on his lungs. We lost Doc a couple of days ago. Rutikanga is likely going to be killed. I’m not joking. He called me late last night and basically said he loves me and he’s sorry but there’s a more serious hit on him since he dodged the last one." #LetMIPeopleGo
"Everyone is locked down, everyone is hungry. The guys in temporary segregation just tried to do a mass suicide." #LetMIPeopleGo

For the first time since June 2nd, we lost an incarcerated human as the result of COVID

This is the 69th human being who has died in Michigan prisons b/c of COVID

Much love to this persons family and friends, rest in peace, much love and empathy #LetMIPeopleGo
The death happened at Macomb correctional, where there has been a recent outbreak.

One thing we found out recently was that while all incarcerated people have been tested for COVID, until around a week ago, staff testing was voluntary

Sigh
While I support unions, sometimes they do not work in favor of public (or incarcerated) health imperatives.

The main vector for COVID entering our prisons is staff and vendors, not having mandatory testing and tracking is insane

This is Susan Farrell. The first woman to die of COVID in Michigan prison. She was 74. Served over 30 years for allegedly killing her husband, who sexually & physically abused her. Just heard from her bunkmate, who alerted guards. They put her in solitary for it. It's even worse:
They let Susan Farrell seize in cell for 45 minutes w the bunkmate screaming for someone and watching her die before healthcare came. Then they cuffed the bunkie, brought her to the command center, then stripped her down and put her in "bam-bam" for 3 full days. What is bam-bam?
The punishment for screaming for help for a dying woman was bam-bam. An extreme form of solitary. "Solitary with 0 property, the lights on the entire time and a camera rolling, a Prison Observation Aide coming by every 15 minutes, and essentially nothing at all in the room."

Stop the false narratives media

There was recidivism before #Covid_19
There is recidivism AFTER releases

You have to compare recidivism rates BEFORE releases with recidivism rates AFTER releases

Anecdotes make for TERRIBLE public policy and don't make us safer #LetMIPeopleGO
Think about it like this....

If the recidivism rate is high at certain times and lower at others you try to establish a baseline...then when changes happen, you evaluate the changes OVER TIME against that baseline
What is most dishonest about this kind of coverage is that the reporters HAVE TO KNOW that prior to reform, people were released who committed similar crimes before the change.

CONTEXT is intentionally withheld to make it seem like a crisis in order to drive clicks
