Beautiful piece in @nypost wrapping up the meaning of the #LittleSistersofthePoor victory at the Supreme Court. nypost.com/2020/07/09/the…
"Old age and infirmity don’t discriminate. They find us all if we live long enough. It’s the inevitable end of life, in which our community finds joy, beauty, and purpose.
We are delighted that the high court has protected our religious freedom. In short, the Supreme Court has given us back our freedom to serve. And we can’t wait to do it." -Mother Loraine #LetThemServe @BECKETlaw @SohrabAhmari @nypost

#FlashbackFriday: Wednesday was a remarkable day for the Little Sisters of the Poor. Even after 7 years and 2 trips to #SCOTUS, the Little Sisters (and I) know we live in a world where #SCOTUS will protect their religious exemption & their mission of caring for the elderly poor. Image
Because we couldn’t physically gather at #SCOTUS this year, @BECKETlaw and @WomenReligious hosted a virtual rally that featured members of Congress, faith leaders, and non-profit organizations. Check out these highlights ⬇️ (2/6)
Catholic nuns (not Little Sisters) led thousands in a rosary in front of a rainy #SCOTUS. It was inspiring to witness these selfless women pray for our nation, joined virtually by even more nuns! Little Sisters of the Poor from CA➡️MD prayed from #sociallydistant chapels. (3/6) Image

Key takeaways from the Little Sisters argument @ #SCOTUS today:
1. It was clear the gov’t has many ways to give out contraception. It doesn’t need to conscript nuns. So #ReligiousFreedom protects the Sisters.
2. The states haven’t identified a SINGLE woman ever denied coverage due to a religious exemption. As the Obama Admin admitted, they get coverage on family plans, on the exchange, or other gov’t programs. Zero harm.
3. The states' argument was exposed as startlingly broad. It not only attacked the exemption for the Sisters. It said the gov’t even lacked authority to exempt CHURCHES. Alito jumped on this; no Justice seemed to buy it.

BIG news at #SCOTUS about the #LittleSisters needs a Friday wrap up. The Little Sisters are back at the Supreme Court? Bear with me (thread):
This case is related to, but different from the one @BECKETlaw won in 2016. Back then we were defending the Little Sisters from a federal mandate that forced them to provide abortion causing drugs and services. They won that fight. (2/7)
After their win, the federal government gave them a religious exemption. American history is rich in examples where people of good faith disagree and exemptions are necessary to protect people from having to violate their deeply held beliefs. (3/7)

@BECKETlaw, which represented the Little Sisters, notes that there are many ways for the government to provide contraceptives without forcing nuns to violate their beliefs.” @WSJopinion on An Unnecessary Culture War wsj.com/articles/an-un…
“HHS reckons no more than 200 employers will take advantage of the new exemption, affecting fewer than 0.1% of 165 million American women.”
“Hard to believe but some on the left, including the attorneys general for California and Washington are still in court trying to deprive the Little Sisters of their exemption. The new rule is a sensible accommodation that should end this unnecessary culture war.” #LetThemServe
