When I was 7 yrs old, my cousin Sameera died from #leukaemia

She was 15 & initially we thought she had the ‘flu

There were no curative treatments in the 80’s & she sadly died

I was heartbroken

In our faith, people gather at the family home to pay their respects

1/5
After school, I would go & visit my aunt & cousins

The front door was always open

People would come & join in prayers

And I remember our childhood #GP , Dr Minwalla, coming after surgery

He wasn’t #Muslim but was very much our family dr & came every evening

2/5
He would come in, take off his shoes & just sit in the corner with a cup of tea

I remember his burgundy socks & sometimes he would smile at me as I said a prayer on little colourful beads

He’d stay for a bit & then head home

At the time, I thought this was rather special

Really chuffed to share our latest work from Sanjana Lab out in @nature today (nature.com/articles/s4158…).

We tested >12,000 genes to find positive regulators of T cell proliferation to be used for next-gen #immunotherapies.

A thread...
(2/28) T cell therapies have shown the potential to cure patients from #cancer – but even in B cell cancers, relapses outnumber cures… One of the problems is limited T cell persistence. #celltherapy #CARTcell
(3/28) We wanted to find new genes (including genes never expressed in T cells) that could improve T cell persistence. Now, the question was: should we use #crispr activation or directly deliver target genes on a #lentivirus?

💬 "My daughter Emma died tragically of #leukaemia aged just 7 months in 2012. Being a bereaved parent is a uniquely awful experience, I have found losing a child to cancer particularly traumatic. The isolation I have felt is unimaginable.”

"What does help me is Emma having a legacy. We do this through our fundraising for Blood Cancer UK and have created Team Emma who do events in her memory.”
"The hardest thing for me is that Emma was my only child, it took me a long time to say this but the most important thing is remembering I am still a mum. I will always be Emma’s mum and I will always be so incredibly proud of her amazing spirit."

Today is #BiomedicalScienceDay2020 - and what better way to celebrate than sharing our latest #ResearchSpotlight with you all!

🔬 This month we're celebrating the work of Professor James Allan, who leads on a Blood Cancer UK funded project and is based at the @UniofNewcastle.
💉 James' work is about understanding how unique genetic changes in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) can be used to tailor treatment.

🧓 AML is most common in the elderly and many of these people cannot have #chemotherapy because of the harsh side effects it causes.
💊 To get around this, James and his team are looking to find ways of using other existing therapies more strategically, based on specific characteristics of these peoples' disease. This is called "stratified medicine."

Morning! In response to some of the tweets we're seeing online about @WWE and @WWERomanReigns we wanted to have a little chat about leukaemia/leukemia, relapse and perceptions of cancer. #WWE @davemeltzerWON
THIS.IS.A.THREAD!
Firstly, incredible news about Roman Reigns. Relapse is a scary reality for all leukaemia patients. Either fear of your cancer returning or having to face treatment for relapse. It's great to hear some positive news from a leukaemia patient.
The tweets we are seeing mainly centre around the idea of what a cancer patient should look like.

"How can he have hair?"
"How can he have not lost weight?"
"Why doesn't he look like a cancer patient?"
