Much of my work on #Liberate37208 began in part last term, like investing deeply in @BVES_MNPS, among other projects.

Huge credit to CM Taylor for leading a committee through giving it more shape and to @whittlz for ensuring young voices were heard.

At our last #MetroCouncil meeting, the CMs from the committee passed a resolution calling on @JohnCooper4Nash to complete a fines and fees study initiated almost a year ago.

Our criminal legal system too often criminalizes poverty itself.
For years, Metro collected so-called jailers’ fees. We literally charged pre-trial inmates—people who could not afford to post bond—$44/day to be incarcerated. But it didn’t go to the jailer; it came to the general fund.

We stopped doing that in 2018.

Two weeks ago, I thought it was important to rejoin the call for new leadership at MNPD.

Little did I know long-time community voices and leaders like @mendesbob would be joined by 15 other CMs, the Interdenomnational Ministers Fellowship, and @aclutn.

Even less could I have imagined that @JohnCooper4Nash would lean into change so quickly. It’s bold leadership.

Now we’ll be engaging in a national search at a perfect moment for reflection on what we need, and making the right choice will also require bold leadership.
I think a few things will be important as we have this conversation as a community.

First, @MNCONashville should have a role in the search process—ideally through direct representation on the search committee.

What we need most right now is for @JohnCooper4Nash and Chief Anderson to jointly lead an immersive conversation about what real public safety is in Nashville.

And it should have some clear goals. It should deal with challenging data and expect to agree to meaningful reforms.
Specifically and especially, that means publicly grappling with the troubling data revealed by the @gideonsarmyutd "Driving While Black" report:

It means grappling with that data having been reinforced by the @policingproject:

Having just weeks ago wrapped up work on #Liberate37208, I’m frustrated that we didn’t have a more authentic community conversation about the future of @BVES_MNPS.

I’ve wondered for a while why we had two elementary schools walking distance from one another in this this area.
I think the enrollment and fiscal challenges are real.

But I think the merger will wind up avoiding the biggest challenge @BVES_MNPS has faced since I moved to Salemtown: it serves more students experiencing #homelessness than any other @MetroSchools school.
This is correlated to an incredibly high student mobility rate (i.e., a lot of students either don't start or finish the academic year at @BVES_MNPS).

This has been an acute problem that won't resolve just because the students now get enrolled at Jones.
