Thoughts on #LiberateTheLane
Perhaps this would be another story if it was possible for me to ride a bike any distance, but for what it's worth, this is my honest take on Liberate, and prioritizing cycle infrastructure in general. I do want cycle lanes, but...
1/ Public transport improvements subsidized by congestion pricing should come first.
That would have a far greater impact on emissions and congestion and lead to greater cycle safety.
More importantly, it would be seen as credible compensation for the unavoidable disruption.
2/ Currently it costs around $10 a day (regular *or* monthly price) for me to catch the bus to and from the city - more than buying 4 litres of petrol. Prices will have to drop a great deal before a car isn't seen as just slightly more expensive, and way more convenient.

For those worried about the 'legality' of #liberatethelane rally on the harbour bridge I note the following;

The clip-ons were meant to be closed 12 noon to 3pm & had been publicly advertised as such - to cater to the rally. Unfortunately, someone stuffed up 1/n
and didn't check with organisers when the rally would finish - at around 11am & realise that cyclists wld simply move onto the bridge. Had the proper time for the clip-ons to be closed been followed (11am) then things would have ben tickety boo. 2/n
As it was Police were hesitant to allow anyone on before 12 noon, but that wasn't a viable option.
While a technical offence, in a court of law it really wouldn't stand up, given the clip-ons were going to be closed from 12 noon for three hours. 3/n
