If you care at all about your local library being fully staffed and fully stocked with the books and materials that offer the best, most comprehensive, diverse, and accurate information to serve all needs, DO NOT SLEEP ON YOUR UPCOMING #LIBRARY BOARD ELECTIONS. #libraries
In communities all over the country, municipal elections this April (next week!!!) include races for seats on public library boards and public school boards. There is a well-funded, well organized, aggressive, right wing movement to take over public board seats & kill libraries.
This movement is dedicated to defunding libraries, banning books that feature #LGBTQ content, any #representation of people of color, and books that deliver accurate physical health information to kids in grades 6 to 12 who absolutely need that information.

Interesting/thought-provoking conversation recently with a retired professional who had spent 30-35 years as national policy lead for several Government departments incl. Home Office & DWP. Short #Thread 1/n
Naturally, our conversation fell to where #libraries stand in the world of policymaking. My first observation was that as soon as you say "library", 2 things happen: 1) people instantly default to *public* libraries and 2) the fog of nostalgia descends. 2/n
It took a good 5 minutes to explain the scope of the library and information sector - people are aware of school libraries and possibly University libraries if they went, but after that it always becomes hazy. That there were LKS in Health came as a surprise to this person. 3/n

While Republicans are smearing #DragQueens, #teachers and #librarians as "groomers," a GOP candidate in South Dakota THIS NOVEMBER was arrested for grooming and raping a family member over multiple years—and the @sdgop didn't even ask him to drop out of the race.
While Republicans are accusing others of being sexual predators, another GOP candidate in South Dakota this November LOST TO HIS MOM and then went out and raped a woman in the bathroom stall at a bar.
And that's not all:

Last year, the richest man in South Dakota—a YUGE GOP donor—was being investigated for child porn.

Yet somehow this politically connected billionaire ended up facing no charges.

NEW: #Librarians are under attack and we need to make a big stink between now and 10/4. Unless the US Copyright Office hears from enough of us, librarians will be fired and fined up to $30,000 for sharing resources copyright trolls don't like with patrons. fightforthefuture.org/actions/defend…
Our friends at @library_futures have a great writeup on what's going on with the extremely problematic #CASEAct to make this even a thing.

We've made it easy to send in your comment and spread the word at fightforthefuture.org/actions/defend…

"Increasingly, libraries are under attack from private sector interests that want to replace the library card with a credit card, and this harmful move to limit what resources people are allowed to learn about at their library is the latest dangerous step." - @LiaHolland

Mega-thread 1/?
Here is a list of publishers of books, including fiction and non-fiction, relevant for Librarians and teachers across primary and secondary. I'm including the publisher name, along with their website so that you can take a look at/download their catalogues ...
... and sign up for newsletters, along with the twitter handles where available so that you can follow them too. I've included as many of the major publishers as I can think of, along with a pretty good list of smaller and diverse presses. While mainly ...
... focussing on the UK market, there are some international publishers too. It will be by no means comprehensive, but may be a good place to begin discovering new texts and resources for your classroom, your library, and to inspire young people. Feel free to add any ...

If you want to borrow a book, go to the library. But if you’ve been recently (even digitally), you know libraries are so much more than that.

They're a catch-all public resource, filling gaps in services and serving as a vital community and social infrastructure. 1/ Image
In its history, the library has gone from exclusive to democratic. The first libraries in the U.S. were created so that rich, white, male colonists could exchange books.

Boy, have they changed. 2/

Now, libraries are truly democratic spaces, designed to serve every segment of society in the same physical space. 3/ Image

1/ Please don't report your new anti-racist activities to your BIPOC colleagues for their approval. It is an additional emotional labor for us. You're going to make a mistake, so let it happen and be open to consequences and correction. Anti-racist work = vulnerability = courage.
2/ BIPOC colleagues have been doing anti-racist work for far longer, and that work has likely been (in)formally discounted for years. You already know what needs to be done. Go read what your colleagues have published and said. Do it.
3/Look at how long we've been talking about it (I know, because I went and gathered them, at least through 2009). GO SEE: bit.ly/3gHX2g2 You know what to do. Do it.

Just got my ARC’s for THIS IS A SEAHORSE! (@AlbertWhitman, 2020) Since people seem curious about the process of making a picture book, I figured I'd write up a THREAD breaking down the choices I made when designing the first book in this series, THIS IS A SEA COW (2019).
1/19
First, a quick jump back in time to 2015 when I attended my first @SCBWI conference. @dsantat spoke about book design. “Form follows function.” It was a lesson that really resonated with me and I became determined to apply what I’d learned to the dummy I was working on.
2/19
That dummy would become my first published book, THIS IS A SEA COW (@AlbertWhitman, 2019).

Librarians:

In the last day or two, I saw photos of the endpapers of Maillard and Martinez-Neal's FRY BREAD, that showed how some libraries have covered names of tribal nations when they put the scanning/cataloging sticker on the endpapers. (1/)
I suppose that problem comes up a lot. What are options some of you have come up with, so that important information on endpapers does not get covered up? (2/2) #Librarians
3. I'll add replies to the thread. To make them fit, I'll need to edit them a bit.

The good news is that there are alternatives to covering up information on endpapers!

Dear Bookworm,

To get a CIA Library card, you’ll need a security clearance.

It might look like a modern public #library, but among the books you’ll find volumes most Americans will never see. The literature of secrets

This semester in my Arts of Islam survey, I decided to scrap the research paper and have students collaborate to re-write @Wikipedia articles. It ended up better than I could have imagined & transformed how I think about teaching #StudentsOfIslamicArt #IslamicArt #MedievalTwitter
I was hesitant about shaking up a popular class that had worked well for years, but one statistic finally convinced me: 90% of Wikipedia articles are written by men - and largely by men from Euro-American contexts. theguardian.com/education/2018…
The oft-maligned #Wikipedia is the now the world's most frequently-consulted source of information & fifth-most visited website. Because anyone can be an editor, it's on us to make it the best resource it can be. If you think Wikipedia is bad, look in the mirror. Wikipedia is us.

The closures that @Rachael_Swindon highlights should also been seen in the context of government policy. She is completely right that this is how the Tories are reducing #socialmobility but it is also how they are reducing access to other vital services for the most vulnerable.
It has long been government policy (in common with other countries) that people should access government services online. Other countries recognise that there is a need to keep other options open to protect the most vulnerable. The UK government took a different approach.
The UK government decided to tell people who had difficulty accessing #digital services that they should go to the #library where staff would help them. They then gave no funding for the training of library staff or for their time or for the equipment needed.
